“…This is particularly desirable when attempting to demon¬ strate that an antidiuretic material is vasopressin. Until recently (Berde, 1965), the rat without DI has been the standard preparation used to investigate the role of vasopressin in hyponatraemia associated with carcinoma of the bronchus (Lee et al 1964;Bower, Mason & Forsham, 1964;Barraclough, Jones & Lee, 1966). It is now clear that this assay is open to criticism since the NDI rat, even when waterloaded and anaesthetized with ethanol, is able to respond to neurohypophysial stimula¬ tion and although such a response is commonly of the all-or-none type, it is occasionally possible to obtain, at first, a small release of vasopressin and then by doubling the stimulus to induce a more massive release.…”
