Brief Report: Are ADHD Traits Dissociable from the Autistic Profile? Links Between Cognition and Behaviour

Abstract: Reports of co-morbid symptoms of ADHD in children with ASD have increased. This research sought to identify ADHD-related behaviours in a sample of children with ASD, and their relationship with the ASD triad of impairments and related cognitive impairments. Children with ASD (n = 55) completed a comprehensive cognitive assessment whilst a semi-structured parental interview (3Di) provided information on ASD and ADHD symptoms. Co-morbid presentation of ADHD traits in these participants was associated with report… Show more

“…Lerner et al (2011) found that ToM ability was negatively correlated with ASD symptoms and social impairments and that fewer ASD symptoms significantly predicted higher ToM scores. Ames and White (2011) investigated the relation between ADHD-related behaviours in a sample of children with ASD and behavioural and cognitive impairments. Poorer performance on ToM measures was significantly related to social difficulties but not to ADHD-related behaviours.…”

“…Reliance on this type of problemsolving style might be further encouraged as a result of the high rates of social anxiety in ASD (Dickerson-Mayes, Calhoun, Murray, Zahid, 2011), and the negative association between social anxiety and assertive social skills (Bellini, 2004). Finally, the common co-occurrence of ADHD symptoms in individuals with ASD (Leyfer et al, 2006;Sinzig, Morsch, Bruning, Schmidt, & Lehmkuhl, 2008), and in particular the high rates of expression of features associated with ADHD inhibition/impulsivity (Ames & White, 2011), could suggest that while not a direct result of the ASD phenotype, individuals with ASD might be predisposed to utilise an impulsive or careless problem-solving style.…”

“…23 Studies with children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) point to abnormalities in the domain of inhibitory and attentional EF processes, such as generation and use of strategies and behavioral control. 4,[24][25][26] In addition to the HT's sensitivity for assessment of children with ADHD, it is also an important instrument for assessing executive impairment in schizophrenia, 27 in autism, 20 and within other clinical frames, 28,29 demonstrating its usefulness for diagnosis of executive and cognitive dysfunctions. However, research with children with typical development is still needed, since such studies are crucial to defining norms and to identifying biological and sociocultural factors related to cognitive and executive processes.…”
