Brief Intervention in Alcohol-Positive Traffic Casualties: Is It Worth the Effort?

Abstract: The effectiveness of BI compared with MI has not been verified, but a significant reduction in consumption has been observed in the whole sample, without significant differences by type of intervention. The persistence and dimension of changes suggest a real effect of both interventions, although the lack of a pure control group does not allow definitive conclusions. Traffic casualties are in a teachable moments to benefit from easy and cheap interventions.

“…34 Despite the enthusiasm around SBIRT, evidence regarding the efficacy of BIs in the ED has been mixed. [35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42] Several studies demonstrated a beneficial effect on negative consequences. 35,38,42,43 While the Academic SBIRT trial, using a quasi-experimental methodology, found reduced consumption at 3 months, 12 effects on decreasing alcohol consumption have not been consistent in other studies.…”

“…10 Other authors have also shown the effectiveness of the motivational intervention applied to youngsters and teenagers brought to ERs, as it reduces harm and alcohol consumption, 7,9,11 effect size may decrease as length of follow-up increases. 2,9 Behavior-oriented treatments have shown promising long-term effects. 10 There are few studies evaluating interventions in ER clinical settings to reduce adolescent alcohol abuse 7,8,11 despite evidence of considerable prevalence (12% to 50%) of alcohol related problems in the adolescent population admitted.…”
