Agrosilvopastoral and silvopastoral systems can increase carbon sequestration, offset greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and reduce the carbon footprint generated by animal production. The objective of this study was to estimate GHG emissions, the tree and grass aboveground biomass production and carbon storage in different agrosilvopastoral and silvopastoral systems in southeastern Brazil. The number of trees required to offset these emissions were also estimated. The GHG emissions were calculated based on pre-farm (e.g. agrochemical production, storage, and transportation), and on-farm activities (e.g. fertilization and machinery operation). Aboveground tree grass biomass and carbon storage in all systems was estimated with allometric equations. GHG emissions from the agroforestry systems ranged from 2.81 to 7.98 t CO2e ha−1. Carbon storage in the aboveground trees and grass biomass were 54.6, 11.4, 25.7 and 5.9 t C ha−1, and 3.3, 3.6, 3.8 and 3.3 t C ha−1 for systems 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively. The number of trees necessary to offset the emissions ranged from 17 to 44 trees ha−1, which was lower than the total planted in the systems. Agroforestry systems sequester CO2 from the atmosphere and can help the GHG emission-reduction policy of the Brazilian government.

Purpose of Review The objective of this review is to identify commonly researched ecosystem service mismatches, including mismatches concerning management and policies implemented to manage ecosystem service delivery. It additionally discusses how mismatches affect the ability to develop effective policies and management guidelines for ecosystem services. Recent Findings Recent ecosystem service literature considers mismatches in the ecosystem, the social system, and as social-ecological interactions. These mismatches occur over three dimensions: spatial, temporal, and functional-conceptual. The research field incorporates not only ecological aspects but also social ones like the management and governance of ecosystem services. However, the focus of the reviewed literature is mainly on spatial and temporal dimensions of mismatches and the production of scientific knowledge, rather than the implementation of the knowledge in management and policies. Summary Research on ecosystem service mismatches reflects the complexity and interconnectedness of social-ecological systems as it encompasses a broad variety of approaches. However, temporal mismatches received less attention than spatial mismatches, especially in regard to social and social-ecological aspects and could be a topic for future research. Furthermore, in order to develop effective policies and management guidelines, research must work closer with decision-makers to not only advance scientific understanding of ecosystem service mismatches but also create understanding and support the uptake of this knowledge.

Los proyectos forestales inscritos en el mercado de carbono voluntario en México son instrumentos que se basan en la mercantilización de un servicio ecosistémico y que consisten en la venta de créditos a un precio establecido en el mercado. Este artículo analiza las características de gobernanza de estos proyectos a través del estudio de dos casos representativos en el país, buscando con ello entender los fundamentos que sustentan su aplicación y el marco institucional en el cual evolucionan. El análisis se basó en una revisión bibliográfica sobre el tema de instrumentos de mercado y trabajo de campo en las comunidades donde se aplican los proyectos forestales. Los resultados muestran que los proyectos de captura de carbono en el mercado voluntario representan una forma de gobernanza ambiental emancipada del Estado, basada en el acuerdo de varios actores con papeles específicos, con marcadas diferencias en los esquemas de funcionamiento establecidos en los contratos. Se detectó que el tipo de tenencia de la tierra es una fuente potencial de conflicto en la aplicación de este tipo de proyectos, los cuales dependen además de la capacidad de cooperación de las comunidades donde se emprenden. Tales proyectos integran iniciativas locales para solucionar un problema a escala global a través de la democratización de la gestión ambiental. Sin embargo, su fundamento neoliberal hace que estos proyectos estén en función del mercado y que, paradójicamente, se busque un mecanismo de solución en el mismo lenguaje monetario que ha causado la crisis ambiental.
