In light of increasing ecological issues, the deployment of environmentally friendly technologies is of major importance. This paper examines how institutions can influence firm behaviour with respect to introducing environmental innovations. Based on institutional and innovation theory, we explore the relationship of institutional factors with two highly relevant and heterogeneous types of environmental innovation, namely: the reduction of material use (Ecomat) and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions (Ecoco). We utilise the 2008 and 2014 survey waves of the Community Innovation Survey (CIS). This allows us to explore two separate cross-sectional samples at different points of time. Each sample is drawn from twelve European Union countries, giving us a total of about 70,000 firms. We find that formal institutions more strongly influence Ecoco innovation, especially for the CIS 2014 sample. We find that informal institutions affect both innovation types similarly.

ESG has become particularly relevant and widespread among a growing number of firms. This dynamic is the consequence of different solicitations to which companies are subject, mainly by stakeholders. To pursue ESG usually requires the implementation of eco‐innovations (EI). Until now, literature about the effects of EI on ESG has been predominantly focused on large corporations, while little attention has been paid to SME, particularly to innovative SMEs. Within the ESG framework, this paper investigates how stakeholders influence innovative SME decisions to adopt EIs. To reach this aim, we investigate a probabilistic sample of 222 SMEs using the Partial Least Squares method. Results highlight that contractual stakeholders exert a higher influence than community stakeholders on EI. Among the single stakeholders belonging to the mentioned categories, only investors/lenders do not exert influence.

Innovation is a crucial dimension for the transition to a greener Europe, a process that has accelerated notably in the latest years. An open mode has been applied to those innovation that mitigate the impact of economic activities on the natural environment, which is green open innovation (GOI). This is approach is mainly driven by the importance of stakeholders and the specificity of environmental fields, which call for a greater role of the external collaboration in green innovation. Although the interest of management scholars and practitioners in GOI has increased enormously, the empirical GOI literature has overlooked a project-level approach. Firms may have heterogenous openness across different projects depending on the characteristics of the projects or the strategic objective of the firm. This paper contributes to GOI literature by investigating whether green projects are more open than non-green projects in terms of breadth and depth of knowledge sources. Based on a dataset of projects funded by Seventh European research framework, the results confirm the greater openness of environmental-related research projects. These results corroborate the necessity for managers to apply an open mode to green innovation, especially in highly competitive calls such as the European Union framework program.
