Bridging Critical Discourse Analysis in Media Discourse Studies

This paper aimed at reviewing the article entitled “The ignored Skill in EFL Context” written by Omer Gokhan Ulum (OGU). It seems in OGU’s article the ignored skill is “listening” skill. He mentioned as a skill that most underestimated in the EFL context. This study sees OGU’s article aims to analyze the difficulties of listening comprehend faced by students of first-year university whos still in the elementary level. OGU’s research involving around 50 EFL students from three different classes. The data was accumulated by interview and a set of questions. The outcome of the study showed some complex problems in that the EFL students find it hard to understood the listening text when people speak with numerous and uncommon accents. In addition, the students are not having the skill to understood the meanings of words which are not pronounced accurately. Moreover, the students are not able to fastly memorize the words or sentences that they have just overheard. listening skill was an annoyance thing of the EFL students who are joined in the study. This paper sees what OGU's articles are trying to detect the EFL students’ listening comprehension issues. These results may help EFL teachers and boosting students listening comprehension skills. As a outcome, this present paper may say that OGU’s article can be replicable onto the same topic research, especially on the methodology section.

This current study is interested in assessing the trending studies discourse analysis during the last five years in the specific context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Using the library research method, this study collected 131,000 results of relevant articles from Google Scholar open-access database. The data then analyse 40 selected articles as its main data with NVivo 12 software to ensure its qualitative. Chronologically, this study described how discourse analysis studies have evolved. At first, solely focusing on using discourse analysis to identify students’ problems in reading comprehension, researchers began to use discourse analysis to examine how teachers authentically perform and propose ways to improve the classroom discourse. Moreover, discourse analysis not only revealed issues that exist between teacher-student and student-student interactive discourses, but also the discourse in the textbooks issued for EFL programmes to raise critical issues.

Kahoot Application in English Language Teaching (ELT) Context: An Alternative Learning Strategy

This research was designed in descriptive qualitative research to ensure there are triangulations data regarding Kahoot apps in English Language Teaching (ELT) context. The data was collected from several related literature on the application of Kahoot online application in English classrooms including online forum. The analysis of the study sees teaching English using media such as Kahoot is one effective strategy that makes students enjoy the teaching and learning process around the globe. Many studies have proven the effectiveness of using video as a learning medium for students, especially in EFL classes. Kahoot seems not only gives students pleasure to learn but also can make students more active and comfortable in the learning process. Therefore, taking a cue from many studies around the world underline the significant findings the teacher as a model must know how to deliver good material using Information system i.e., Kahoot online application. This study also would like to suggest before using this online application as a medium for teaching, teachers must have a step by step plan of what the teacher must do during teaching and learning to ensure the quality of teaching.
