Brexit Announcement: Immediate Impact on British Tourism in Spain

Abstract: The United Kingdom constitutes the principal tourist source market for Spain. This research note analyzes the immediate impact of the Brexit on British tourism in Spain using the Bayesian structural time series models framework. The results obtained show that between July 2016 and September 2017, Brexit has not produced any initial negative effect on the arrival of British tourists or on their spending in Spain.

“…Building upon existing empirical research (such as Perles-Ribes et al. , 2019a, b, 2018; Khan Jaffur and Seetanah, 2020; Khan Jaffur et al. , 2021), we follow a two-step procedure to apply the BSTS framework for causal analysis (see Perles-Ribes et al.…”

“…Other researchers, such as Perles-Ribes, Ramón-Rodríguez, and Ortuño Padilla (2019), used the Bayesian structural time series framework to investigate the immediate effect of Brexit on British tourism in Spain. Their results suggest that Brexit did not cause an initial negative effect on the influx of or spending by British tourists in Spain.…”
