Brevibacillus as a biological tool: a short review

Abstract: The significance of Brevibacillus has been documented scientifically in the published literature and commercially in heterologous recombinant protein catalogs. Brevibacillus is one of the most widespread genera of Gram-positive bacteria, recorded from the diverse environmental habitats. The high growth rate, better transformation efficiency by electroporation, availability of shuttle vectors, production of negligible amount of extracellular protease, and the constitutive expression of heterologous proteins mak… Show more

“…Many bioactive compounds have been isolated from Brevibacillus spp. since then, including new antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-invertebrate agents (8,9). For instance, extracellular neutral protease that controls nematode growth was obtained from a Brevibacillus sp.…”

“…The genus Bacillus and related genera are reported to be widely distributed in nature. It includes thermophilic, psychrophilic, acidophilic, alkaliphilic and halophilic bacteria that utilize a wide range of carbon sources for heterotrophic growth or are the autotrophs (Panda et al, 2014). In the present study, the isolates were recovered from five hot springs in Eritrea with different temperature regimes (49 -100°C), as well as different sodium concentration levels ranging from 0.06 to 3640 mg/lt at near neutral pH.…”

“…G ram-positive bacteria of the genus Brevibacillus are widespread in various habitats [1]. They are characterized by a high growth rate, better transformation efficiency using electroporation, the presence of transport vectors, the production of a small amount of extracellular protease and the constitutive expression of heterologous proteins [1]. Representatives of this genus are of great biotechnological interest -they are a source of various enzymes, antitumor peptides, and are capable of biodegrading polyethylene [1,2].…”
