Twenty-eight F1 combinations of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) obtained from half-diallel cross along with eight diverse parents were evaluated in a field study to elucidate the information on the extent of mean performance of various horticultural traits. The analysis revealed that all the genotypes possessed wide spectrum of variability and showed significant differences for parents and hybrids for the traits studied. For parents UHF CHI 13 (216.20), UHF CHI 15 (193.80), UHF CHI 5 (139.00) and for hybrids H1 (182.60), H9 (181.40) and H7 (172.80) hold highest fruit count per plant. The parents UHF CHI 5 (1047.13 g), UHF CHI 15 (949.62 g) and UHF CHI 7 (912.61 g) and cross combinations H17 (1535.10 g), H8 (1320.00), H6 (1229.76) and H18 (967.60) recorded the high ripe fruit yield per plant. As for earliness, parents UHF CHI 5 (43.33), UHF CHI 11 (45.00), UHF CHI 7 (45.33) and hybrids H27 (42.67), H26 (43.00) and UH28 (43.00) took minimum days for flowering. For pungency UHF CHI 12 (0.28%), UHF CHI 13 (0.26%), DKC-8 (0.24%) and H23 (0.33%), H5 (0.31%), H26 (0.26%) recorded high capsaicin content.

This study was conducted to identify the allelic interactions and genetic effects involved in genetic control of quantitative traits in Capsicum annuum. Six generations (P 1 , P 2 , F 1 , F 2 , BC 1 and BC 2) were used to study the variances, means and allelic interactions of 16 quantitative traits evaluated. The additive part of the phenotypic variance found for plant height, number of peppers per plant, days to flowering and days to fruiting lead to the conclusion that phenotypic selection in the F 2 generation are likely effective in obtaining genetic gains. According to the reduced model, the traits of canopy width, fruit width and number of seeds per fruit were not influenced by epistatic effects, but only by additive and dominant effects, which allows selection of superior individuals in segregating generations or improvement of these traits by means of hybridization.

Genome sequencing, annotation and application of a strain of Microbacterium paraoxydans – a heavy metal hypertolerant and plant growth promoting bacterium

A heavy metal hypertolerant plant growth promoting bacterium was isolated from arsenic contaminated garden soil of Bhagobangola I block (Murshidabad district). Metagenomic classification identified the bacterial isolate as a member of genus Microbacterium. Taxonomic assessment showed maximum average nucleotide identity (89.99%) with Microbacterium paraoxydans strain DSM 15019. Prokaryotic genome annotation was performed by Prokka, DFAST and RAST. The entire genome consisted of 3365911 bases with 69.90% GC-content. Prokka detected 3216 coding sequences (1461 hypothetical sequences), 3283 genes, 10 miscellaneous RNA, 3 rRNA, 53 tRNA and 1 tmRNA. DFAST detected 3257 coding sequences (1217 hypothetical sequences), 3 rRNA and 53 tRNA. Both Prokka and DFAST failed to detect any CRISPR sequence. RAST could detect 3285 coding sequences and 49 RNAs in the genome. Only 25% (821) of these sequences fell within the subsystem of RAST, which included 789 coding sequences as non-hypothetical and 32 sequences as hypothetical. Genes and Gene clusters responsible for arsenic resistance (arsR, arsB, arsC, acr1, acr2, acr3), other heavy metal (Copper, Manganese, Zinc, etc.) tolerance and plant growth promotion (Auxin biosynthesis, Siderophore mediated iron acquisition, Phosphate and polyphosphate metabolism, Trehalose biosynthesis, etc.) could also be identified in the Microbacterium paraoxydans genome. The heavy metal (arsenic) hypertolerance, bioremediation potential and plant growth promoting nature of the bacterium were confirmed by plate assay, SDDC assay and pot experiments, respectively. The aforementioned traits point towards the probable application of the bacterium as a bioremediation tool and biofertilizer, for reduction of arsenic toxicity and promotion of plant growth.
