Breeding of Acrocomia aculeata using genetic diversity parameters and correlations to select accessions based on vegetative, phenological, and reproductive characteristics

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Macaw palm (Acrocomia aculeata) is a promising species for use in biofuel production, and establishing breeding programs is important for the development of commercial plantations. The aim of the present study was to analyze genetic diversity, verify correlations between traits, estimate genetic parameters, and select different accessions of A. aculeata in the Macaw Palm Germplasm Bank located in Universidade Federal de Viçosa, to develop a breeding program for this species. Accessions were selected … Show more

“…Fresh leaves from a young macaw palm plant were collected and kept for 1 week at 4 °C to decrease starch level. The young plant was obtained from seeds of macaw palm plants belonging to the ex situ plant collection, Macaúba Active Germplasm Bank (BAG-Macaúba repository: 084/2013/ CGEN/MMA) located in the experimental farm of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa (208400100S, 4283101500W), State of Minas Gerais, Brazil (Coser et al 2016;Lanes et al 2015;Lanes et al 2016;Mengistu et al 2016a, b;Montoya et al 2016).…”

“…Due to its attractive features, the macaw palm domestication, genetic breeding and development of commercial plantations have encouraged financial investments in basic research, biotechnology and industry. Studies in several areas have been carried out with this purpose, including ecophysiology (Pires et al 2013), mating system (Lanes et al 2016), vegetative development (Berton et al 2013;Machado et al 2016), fruit development (Montoya et al 2016), phenotypic diversity (Ciconini et al 2013;Lanes et al 2015;Conceição et al 2015;Coser et al 2016) and biotechnological applications (Moura et al 2009;Luis and Scherwinski-Pereira 2014;Padilha et al 2015).…”

“…The above-mentioned statistical software were used to identify the models of variability between genotypes and the relationship between different clusters of particular traits (Akhtar et al, 2010;Iqbal et al, 2014;Saeed et al, 2014). In order to estimate the genetic diversity for breeding of different traits in various crops, similar statistical methods have been used successfully in many breeding programs (Coser et al, 2016).…”

“…Fruit yield grew over the years in all the predicted scenarios (Table 4) program. Consequently, the base population choice and the mother plant selection methods for the cuttings would be decisive as regards the increase in fruit productivity of the macauba crop over the years (Berton et al 2013;Coser et al 2016;Montoya et al 2016;Castro et al 2017).…”
