Incessant development and introduction of novel cultivars with improved floral attributes are vital in the dynamic ornamental industry. Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium) is a highly favored ornamental plant, ranking second globally in the cut flower trade, after rose. Development of new chrysanthemum cultivars with improved and innovative modifications in ornamental attributes, including floral color, shape, plant architecture, flowering time, enhanced shelf life, and biotic and abiotic stress tolerance, is a major goal in chrysanthemum breeding. Despite being an economically important ornamental plant, the application of conventional and molecular breeding approaches to various key traits of chrysanthemum is hindered owing to its genomic complexity, heterozygosity, and limited gene pool availability. Although classical breeding of chrysanthemum has resulted in the development of several hundreds of cultivars with various morphological variations, the genetic and transcriptional control of various important ornamental traits remains unclear. The coveted blue colored flowers of chrysanthemums cannot be achieved through conventional breeding and mutation breeding due to technical limitations. However, blue-hued flower has been developed by genetic engineering, and transgenic molecular breeding has been successfully employed, leading to substantial progress in improving various traits. The recent availability of whole-genome sequences of chrysanthemum offers a platform to extensively employ MAS to identify a large number of markers for QTL mapping, and GWAS to dissect the genetic control of complex traits. The combination of NGS, multi-omic platforms, and genome editing technologies has provided a tremendous scope to decipher the molecular and regulatory mechanisms. However, the application and integration of these technologies remain inadequate for chrysanthemum. This review, therefore, details the significance of floral attributes, describes the efforts of recent advancements, and highlights the possibilities for future application towards the improvement of crucial ornamental traits in the globally popular chrysanthemum plant.

A plant regeneration system was developed through shoot organogenesis from in vitro leaf explants of Chrysanthemum morifolium 'Ohblang'. The effects of different concentrations of plant growth regulators and AgNO 3 on efficient shoot regeneration and inhibition of browning were evaluated in chrysanthemum. The explants were cultured on MS shoot induction medium supplemented with 12 combination treatments of 6-benzyladenine (BA) 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg/L, and α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) 0.2, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg/L in darkness for 6 weeks and cultured under a 16/8 h photoperiod for 6 weeks. The highest shoot regeneration was obtained from the explants cultured on the medium with 1.0 mg/L BA and 1.0 mg/L NAA. Based on this result, AgNO 3 was added to a shoot induction medium containing MS salts, vitamins, 1.0 mg/L BA, 1.0 mg/L NAA, 30 g/L sucrose, and 6 g/L agar to reduce browning of chrysanthemum leaf explants. In the control treatment without AgNO 3 , leaf explants turned brown at the cut edge; however, browning was not observed in AgNO 3 treatments. Shoot organogenesis was higher at low concentrations of AgNO 3 and decreased with an increase in AgNO 3 concentration. The explants cultured on shoot induction medium (MS salts, vitamins, 1.0 mg/L BA, 1.0 mg/L NAA) with 1 mg/L of AgNO 3 produced the highest shoot regeneration with 2.6 shoots per explants and a browning index of 0.7. When the regenerated shoots were detached from the explants and cultured on MS medium, the shoots were elongated and rooted successfully.

The number of flower types filed and registered in the Korea Seed & Variety Service has increased each year. Of the 7,731 crops registered to date, flowers account for 53%, with 4,123 cases. This seems to reflect the nature of flowers with their various shapes and colors, as well as rapid change in varieties. The 1980s was seen as the birth of different flower varieties, with a focus on the collection of genetic resources for each flower type, the selection of chrysanthemums and rose varieties, and culturing of trumpet lilies and carnations. The 1990s was an era of globalization and the import of agricultural products, which enabled research on new flower varieties and the mass production of seedlings to develop strategies for export. In 1995, the Seed Industry Act was implemented and the cultivation of varieties actively began with Korea joining the International Union of the Production of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV); research on breeding and producing high quality seedlings for development of flower types such as lilies, carnations, chrysanthemums, roses, hibiscus, gerberas, gladioli, herbaceous flowers, cacti, orchids, and various other novel floral crops were expanded. In particular, support measures to promote private breeding were also devised. In the 2000s, breeding technology was stabilized, which led to the development of many new varieties at national and local levels, even by common citizens. Penetration rates of chrysanthemums, roses, and orchids, whose main focus was breeding, increased from 1% in 2000 to 5.8% in 2008 and 27.3% in the 2010s. Currently, cactus dominates the world market, with domestic varieties accounting for 70% of the world's trade, while freesias account for 60.4%, showing the high contribution of domestic small area crops. 'Baekma' (chrysanthemums), 'Shiny gold' (freesia), 'Deep purple' (rose), and 'Woori tower' (lily) are representative examples of domestic varieties bred in Korea. In the future, the development of varieties tailored to various consumers will be promoted, along with research on the production of virus-free seedlings, genome technology for enhancing breeding efficiency, and adding high value to the flower industry.
