“…For this purpose, we decided to screen for recombinants in the progeny of a BC 4 line derived from the recurrent parent “Tamaizumi” and “Yumechikara”. Q.Ymym was introduced into “Tamaizumi” by four recurrent backcrosses using two markers, wmc41 and TNAC1139 , which led to the development of a new WYMV‐resistant variety “Tamaizumi R” (Kiribuchi‐Otobe et al, ). During the breeding process, 603 BC 4 F 2 plants were screened and three lines which showed heterozygosity for 19 markers within the Q.Ymym block were obtained (Figure b; Figure S2).…”

“…Six of the nine associated markers are dominant markers detecting either the "Yumechikara" or "Kitahonami" allele; still, several sets of these markers have been used for marker-assisted selection (MAS) in Japanese breeding programmes. Recently, the Q.Ymym QTL has been successfully introduced into the susceptible variety "Tamaizumi" and a new pathotype I resistant variety, "Tamaizumi R", has been registered (Kiribuchi-Otobe et al, 2019).…”

“…This presents a possibility to pyramid Qym4 with other WYMV-resistance QTLs. Resistance QTLs on chromosome arm 2DL have been reported to be closely linked to small grain size and high polyphenol oxidase activity, both of which are considered undesirable traits in wheat breeding (Kasuya et al 2017, Kiribuchi-Otobe et al 2019). Although we have yet to elucidate whether Qym4 is closely linked to such undesirable agronomic or processing quality traits, our results indicate that Qym4 can be transferred to breeding materials by marker-assisted selection.…”
