The objective was to study the relationship of climatic conditions with the temperature of the scrotum surface and sperm quality through digital infrared thermography in Nellore bulls, raised extensively. In six bulls held with scrotal thermography Flir E40® cameras, blood samples for serum testosterone and semen collection were taken by electroejaculation every 10 days, with six replications. Climatic factors: ambient temperature, relative humidity, dry globe temperature and temperature of the wet globe were recorded using a globe thermometer (InstruTemp®, ITWTG-2000). Thermal images of the scrotum were analyzed with the Flir Tools® software for the temperatures of scrotal surface, the right and left sides of the scrotum lap thirds: dorsal, middle and ventral testicles; and tails of the epididymis. The semen data and thermograms were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's test at 5%. Pearson correlation was used for the surface temperatures of the scrotum, rectal temperature, quantitative and qualitative characteristics of semen and climatic factors. There was a positive correlation (P<0.05) for sperm motility x scrotal temperatures; sperm concentration x scrotal temperatures; climatic factors x rectal temperature. There was a negative correlation (P<0.05) between ambient temperature x sperm concentration. It was concluded that the temperature of the scrotum surface and climatic factors, temperature and humidity, influence the quality of semen. Thermography is recommended as a supplementary examination for reproductive evaluation of bulls. Em seis touros realizaram-se termografia escrotal com câmera Flir E40®, colheita de sangue para a testosterona sérica e colheita de sêmen por eletroejaculação a cada 10 dias, com seis repetições. Os fatores climáticos: temperatura ambiente, umidade relativa do ar, temperatura do globo seco e temperatura do globo úmido foram registrados com globotermômetro (InstruTemp®, ITWTG-2000). Os termogramas do escroto foram analisados com o software Flir Tools® para as temperaturas da superfície escrotal, dos lados direito e esquerdo, colo do escroto, terços: dorsal, médio e ventral dos testículos; e caudas dos epidídimos. Os dados do sêmen e dos termogramas foram submetidos à análise de variância e teste de Tukey a 5%. Correlação de Pearson foi empregada para as temperaturas da superfície do escroto, temperatura retal, características quantitativas e qualitativas do sêmen e fatores climáticos. Parâmetros fisiológicos de bovinos cruzados submetidos ao estresse calórico RESUMOCaracterizaram-se as respostas fisiológicas de termorregulação em conforto e estresse calórico de bovinos cruzados F 2 (½ Gir x ½ Holandês), machos e fêmeas, com idade entre 14 e 20 meses. Os animais foram alocados, em número de cinco, e submetidos ao conforto térmico (22°C a 70% de umidade relativa) por 12 horas e ao estresse calórico (42ºC e 60% de umidade relativa) durante seis horas, logo após o período de conforto, nas estações de verão e inverno, em câmara bioclimática. Nas duas etapas, foram registradas a temperatura retal (TR), a freqüência respiratória (FR) e a temperatura de superfície corporal (TSC) às 6 e 16 horas. Os animais apresentaram aumento da TR, da FR e da TSC no período de estresse calórico (P<0,05). O aumento da TR e FR foi mais acentuado no verão (P<0,05). Brahman preimplantation embryos are less affected by exposure to heat shock than Holstein embryos. Two experiments were conducted to test whether the ability of Brahman embryos to resist the deleterious effects of heat shock was a result of the genetic and cellular contributions from the oocyte, spermatozoa, or a combination of both. In the first experiment, Brahman and Holstein oocytes were collected from slaughterhouse ovaries and fertilized with spermatozoa from an Angus bull. A different bull was used for each replicate to eliminate bull effects. On day 4 after fertilization, embryos >or= 9 cells were collected and randomly assigned to control (38.5 degrees C) or heat shock (41 degrees C for 6 hr) treatments. The proportion of embryos developing to the blastocyst (BL) and advanced blastocyst (ABL; expanded and hatched) stages was recorded on day 8. Heat shock reduced the number of embryos produced from Holstein oocytes that developed to BL (P < 0.001, 55.6 +/- 4.2% vs. 29.8 +/- 4.2%) and ABL (P < 0.01, 37.7 +/- 3.6% vs. 12.2 +/- 3.6%) on day 8 as compared to controls. In contrast, heat shock did not reduce development of embryos produced from Brahman oocytes (BL = 42.1 +/- 4.8% vs. 55.6 +/- 4.8% for 38.5 and 41 degrees C, respectively; ABL = 17.6 +/- 4.2% vs. 32.4 +/- 4.2%). In the second experiment, oocytes from Holstein cows were fertilized with semen from bulls of either Brahman or Angus breeds. Heat shock of embryos >or= 9 cells reduced development to BL (P < 0.002) and ABL (P < 0.005) for embryos sired by both Brahman (BL = 54.3 +/- 7.7% vs. 23.4 +/- 7.7%; ABL = 43. +/- 7.4% vs. 7.9 +/- 7.4%, for 38.5 and 41 degrees C, respectively) and Angus bulls (BL = 57.9 +/- 7.7% vs. 31.0 +/- 7.7%; ABL = 33.6 +/- 7.4% vs. 18.4 +/- 7.4%, for 38.5 and 41 degrees C, respectively). There were no breed x temperature interactions. Results suggest that the oocyte plays a more significant role in the resistance of Brahman embryos to the deleterious effects of heat shock than the spermatozoa.
