Brazilian multicenter study on prevalence of preterm birth and associated factors

Abstract: BackgroundThe occurrence of preterm birth remains a complex public health condition. It is considered the main cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality, resulting in a high likelihood of sequelae in surviving children. With variable incidence in several countries, it has grown markedly in the last decades. In Brazil, however, there are still difficulties to estimate its real occurrence. Therefore, it is essential to establish the prevalence and causes of this condition in order to propose prevention actions. … Show more

“…Many previous studies have demonstrated that preterm and multiple pregnancies were associated with LBW[14]-[16]. With the exception of congenital malformations, preterm births result in 75% of neonatal deaths and more than half of long-term morbidity[17]. Use of assisted reproductive technology leads to the increase in the rate of multiple pregnancies[18].…”

All participating women signed an informed consent form.…”

“…The EMIP has been previously described . In brief, it was a comprehensive observational study that identified all PTBs occurring in 20 referral facilities with more than 33 000 deliveries, and collected more than 300 variables related to potentially associated factors and maternal and neonatal outcomes.…”
