Among the various agro-industrial by-products, sugar beet molasses produced by sugar refineries appear as a potential feedstock for ethanol production through yeast fermentation. A response surface methodology (RSM) was developed to better understand the effect of three process parameters (concentration of nutrient, yeast and initial sugar) on the ethanol productivity using diluted sugar beet molasses and Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast. The first set of experiments performed at lab-scale indicated that the addition of 4 g/L of nutrient combined with a minimum of 0.2 g/L of yeast as well as a sugar concentration lower than 225 g/L was required to achieve high ethanol productivities (<15 g/L/d). The optimization allowed to considerably reduce the amount of yeast initially introduced in the fermentation substrate while still maximizing both ethanol productivity and yield process responses. Finally, scale-up assays were carried out in 7.5 and 100 L bioreactors using the optimal conditions: 150 g/L of initial sugar concentration, 0.27 g/L of yeast and 4 g/L of nutrient. Within 48 h of incubation, up to 65 g/L of ethanol were produced for both scales, corresponding to an average ethanol yield and sugar utilization rate of 82% and 85%, respectively. The results obtained in this study highlight the use of sugar beet molasses as a low-cost food residue for the sustainable production of bioethanol.

Com uma crescente demanda energética, o Brasil busca diversificar suas fontes de matéria-prima. Neste contexto, o milho torna-se uma importante fonte de produção energética, uma vez que é utilizado principalmente na produção do etanol combustível. Com isso, cabe considerar uma possível influência do tipo de híbrido utilizado, devido a diferença de produtividade de grãos durante o período de cultivo, podendo impactar diretamente na eficiência industrial/fermentativa. Portando, o presente estudo avaliou os reflexos do processamento de três híbridos de milho na produção de etanol. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições para cada tratamento. Os híbridos utilizados foram: Dekalb 636, Pioneer 3754 e Syngenta 8454. Os grãos foram triturados e imersos em água acidulada (pH≈5,5) na proporção de 250 g.L-1, adição de enzima α-amilase (LpHera® Novozymes), submetidos a aquecimento por 1h (100ºC). As pastas foram resfriadas a temperatura ambiente (25±3°C), filtradas em peneira de 20 mashes, com o ajuste do Brix para 16% e pH para 4,5, originando o mosto. Os mostos foram inoculados com a levedura industrial TR (Thermo-Resistente), com a adição da enzima glucoamilase (LpHera® Novozymes). As fermentações foram mantidas em B.O.D. a 33˚C, sendo avaliado o desenvolvimento fisiológico da levedura. Ao final do processo fermentativo (Brix≤1%), as amostras foram centrifugadas, obtendo-se amostras de vinho. Para as pastas e mostos obtidos, foram avaliados os parâmetros de Brix, Açúcares Redutores Totais (ART), pH, Acidez Total, Compostos Fenólicos Totais e Amido. Para os vinhos, foram avaliados o teor de Brix, Açúcares Redutores Residuais Totais (ARRT), pH, Acidez Total, Amido, Glicerol e Teor Alcoólico. Através dos resultados obtidos, observou-se que para os híbridos Dekalb e Syngenta, o teor de Brix das amostras não obtiveram diferença significativa. Dentre os tratamentos, cabe destacar o índice de ART do híbrido Syngenta, os quais foram verificados valores na ordem de 14,6%, o dobro de ácidos orgânicos e maior teor de amido na pasta. Para o processo fermentativo, não foram verificadas diferenças significativas, considerando-se os três híbridos de milho. Quanto aos resultados do teor alcoólico e o glicerol, não houve diferença significativa entre os híbridos. Dessa forma, conclui-se que o processo fermentativo e a produção de etanol não são influenciadas pelos grãos de híbridos de milho processados. Porém, destacando-se o processo de hidrólise, foram verificadas diferenças significativas quanto a disponibilidade de açúcares fermentescíveis e amido, indicando significativo efeito do híbrido de milho utilizado.

Oxidative Torrefaction of Sunflower Husk Pellets in the Kaolin Layer

In this paper oxidative torrefaction of sunflower husk pellets in the kaolin layer was firstly investigated. Besides, influence of kaolin without use of special additives on limitation of the oxygen flow from environment into the sunflower husk was analyzed. Torrefaction temperature, torrefaction time, and height of kaolin layer over the range of 240-280 °C, 30-60 min, and 3-5 cm, respectively were varied. Analysis showed that increase of temperature led to more significant influence of layer height on mass yield. Energy yield gradually decreased with increasing torrefaction temperature and torrefaction time, and height of kaolin layer had the opposite effect on the energy yield. With the increase of torrefaction intensity, drier fuel with higher hydrophobicity was formed. Torrefaction resulted to biomass destruction, although the fiber structure was retained.
