Brain-Derived Neurotropic Factor in Neurodegenerative Disorders

Abstract: Globally, neurodegenerative diseases cause a significant degree of disability and distress. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), primarily found in the brain, has a substantial role in the development and maintenance of various nerve roles and is associated with the family of neurotrophins, including neuronal growth factor (NGF), neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) and neurotrophin-4/5 (NT-4/5). BDNF has affinity with tropomyosin receptor kinase B (TrKB), which is found in the brain in large amounts and is expressed in… Show more

“…Furthermore, the combination treatment of baicalein and memantine at the dose of 20 + 5 mg/kg augmented neuronal health, which can be confirmed by the brown colouration of moderate expression of BDNF. Similarly the combination treatment of baicalein with memantine at a dose of 20 + 10 mg/kg also demonstrated significant enhancement in neuronal survival and plasticity depicted by the dark brown colouration of moderate BDNF expression in both the hippocampus and cortex [ 34 ]. The OD data plotted against treatment group also demonstrated the highest OD for the combination treatment of baicalein and memantine at the dose of 20 + 10 mg/kg when compared with the disease control group ( Figure 12 and Figure 13 ).…”

“…But of course, because of the small size and non-peptide nature they can lead to the development of molecule that can follow an alternate route with fewer side effects and more specific to the receptor [215][216][217][218][219][220][221]. In recent years, lots of review and research have been published on recent advancements of nanotechnology and their application on neurological disease as well as NP [222][223][224][225][226][227][228][229][230][231][232][233].…”

“…Long-term synaptic plasticity was identified first by Timothy Bliss and TerjeLomo. When the post-tetanic potentiation lasts for days, due to repeated synaptic activity strengthening of synapses occurs, this is otherwise called as LTP [ 22 ]. This is associated with increased influx of Ca 2+ in the post-synaptic terminal [ 23 ] which increases the synaptic strength.…”
