“…The cause of ocular SCC is still poorly understood; however, there are several factors including genetic susceptibility, nutrition levels, age, UV light, circumocular apigmentation and viruses that may contribute to its development (Tsujita & Plummer 2010). Besides the eyelids, SCC was observed in the third eyelid in cattle, horses, dogs, cats and a sheep; cornea, in cattle; and bulbar conjunctiva in cattle and one dog.…”

“…Primary ocular surface squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is common in cattle and horses but rarely described in the dog with a literature search revealing nine case reports and one retrospective review of 26 cases, all published within the past 27 years. In horses and cattle, lightly pigmented animals and those exposed to higher levels of ultraviolet radiation have an increased risk for developing ocular and adnexal SCC . In dogs, however, these factors have not been demonstrated to influence the development of ocular SCC.…”

“…Recently, chronic keratitis, as seen in brachycephalic breeds, and the use of topical cyclosporine have been hypothesized to play a role in the pathogenesis of corneal SCC in dogs . The primary treatment strategy in large animals has consisted of surgical excision of the affected tissue, and recurrence rate may be decreased with the use of adjunctive procedures such as cryotherapy, immunotherapy, radiofrequency hyperthermia, strontium 90 irradiation, or topical chemotherapy . In the dog, surgical excision alone or with adjunctive therapy using cryotherapy, strontium 90 irradiation, or topical chemotherapy has been successful in the treatment of corneal SCC.…”
