Botulinum Toxin for Hyperhidrosis

Abstract: Primary focal hyperhidrosis is a disorder of idiopathic excessive sweating that typically affects the axillae, palms, soles, and face. The disorder, which affects up to 2.8% of the US population, is associated with considerable physical, psychosocial, and occupational impairments. Current therapeutic strategies include topical aluminum salts, tap-water iontophoresis, oral anticholinergic agents, local surgical approaches, and sympathectomies. These treatments, however, have been limited by a relatively high in… Show more

“…8 Intradermal infiltrations of BTX (types A and B) are effective options; however, they are limited by their cost and by the local discomfort, and may result in transitory alterations to the fine movements of the hands. 4,7 T2-T3 thoracic sympathectomy is an alternative solution for palmar hyperhidrosis; however, it is asso- …”

“…Various methods for reducing excessive sweating include: special diets (without coffee, tea, coca-cola, chocolate), diverse antiperspirants, such as over-the counter ointments/tinctures, topical aluminium chloride, medicines, drugs (oral anticholinergics), tap water ionophoresis (9), intradermal injections of botulinum toxin type A (botox) (10,11), but only surgical treatment has shown the best long-term results (12)(13)(14).…”
