Bottom stresses of static packing of granular chains

Abstract: h i g h l i g h t s• Bottom stress of a granular chains column is measured precisely and reproducibly.• Scaling behavior of the stress saturation curves agrees with the Janssen model. • Saturation mass is shown as a nonmonotonic function of the chain length.• A transition of the saturation mass is found at the persistence length of chains. • Entanglements as a possible explanation for nonmonotonic behavior are presented. a b s t r a c tWe experimentally measure the static stress at the bottom of a granular cha… Show more

“…The case L = ∞ corresponds to the absence of the baffle. The semi-rigid chains inside the container are composed of hollow, steel balls and steel rods, which are similar with those used in previous work [14,17]. The rod, as a link connecting balls, is not fixed, but rather retractile.…”

“…29,30 Flexible granular chains are therefore considered a model system for polymeric chains just as colloids are thought of as giant atoms. [31][32][33][34][35][36] While most studies focus on the column collapse and packing of these chains, a quasi-static measurement of the repose angle is missing despite its significance. 28,35 Here, we investigate the mechanism of repose of granular chains through a series of experiments.…”

“…Studies have been conducted with reference to the determination of pressures acting on flat bottom silos (Diniz & Nascimento, 2006;Balevičius et al, 2011;Gallego et al, 2011;Rotter & Sadowski, 2012;Nascimento et al, 2013;Lopes Neto et al, 2014;Wen et al, 2015;Horabik et al, 2016;Wang et al, 2016;Pieraccini et al, 2017;Frank et al, 2018). However, there is a need for studies on the use of new materials for the flat bottom of these silos, which are elements subject to dynamic, often non-uniform loads.…”
