We examined the relationship between climate variables and grassland area burned in Xilingol, China, from 2001 to 2014 using an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model, and describe the application of this econometric method to studies of climate influences on wildland fire. We show that there is a stationary linear combination of non-stationary climate time series (cointegration) that can be used to reliably estimate the influence of different climate signals on area burned. Our model shows a strong relationship between maximum temperature and grassland area burned. Mean monthly wind speed and monthly hours of sunlight were also strongly associated with area burned, whereas minimum temperature and precipitation were not. Some climate variables like wind speed had significant immediate effects on area burned, the strength of which varied over the 2001–14 observation period (in econometrics terms, a ‘short-run’ effect). The relationship between temperature and area burned exhibited a steady-state or ‘long-run’ relationship. We analysed three different periods (2001–05, 2006–10 and 2011–14) to illustrate how the effects of climate on area burned vary over time. These results should be helpful in estimating the potential impact of changing climate on the eastern Eurasian Steppe.

Spatiotemporal Simulation of Future Land Use/Cover Change Scenarios in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area

Abstract:Simulating future land use/cover changes is of great importance for urban planners and decision-makers, especially in metropolitan areas, to maintain a sustainable environment. This study examines the changes in land use/cover in the Tokyo metropolitan area (TMA) from 2007 to 2017 as a first step in using supervised classification. Second, based on the map results, we predicted the expected patterns of change in 2027 and 2037 by employing a hybrid model composed of cellular automata and the Markov model. The next step was to decide the model inputs consisting of the modeling variables affecting the distribution of land use/cover in the study area, for instance distance to central business district (CBD) and distance to railways, in addition to the classified maps of 2007 and 2017. Finally, we considered three scenarios for simulating land use/cover changes: spontaneous, sub-region development, and green space improvement. Simulation results show varied patterns of change according to the different scenarios. The sub-region development scenario is the most promising because it balances between urban areas, resources, and green spaces. This study provides significant insight for planners about change trends in the TMA and future challenges that might be encountered to maintain a sustainable region.

Лесные ресурсы приобретают экономическую значимость при условии их транспортной доступности для лесозаготовителей. Специфика лесозаготовок в России предполагает работу в труднодоступных районах с применением в зимнее время снежно-ледяных дорог (зимников), и Республика Карелия не является исключением. Из-за глобального потепления климата происходит сокращение сроков их использования, в этой связи оценка экономической значимости подобной сезонной транспортной инфраструктуры представляется важной и актуальной. Научная новизна поставленной задачи состоит в развитии междисциплинарного подхода по направлению влияния изменения климата на российскую экономику путем включения в него проблематики функционирования зимников. В статье предложен подход использования данных дистанционного зондирования Земли для улучшения моделей влияния глобального потепления на объемы вывозки древесины по зимникам. Идентификация рубок с помощью обработки космических снимков предоставляет возможность перейти от построения математических моделей по пяти климатическим зонам, превышающим сотни квадратных километров, к сети регулярных значений размером 10 × 10 км. Выявление мест лесозаготовок осуществлялось с помощью методов наблюдения за изменениями спектральных характеристик до и после рубки в программном комплексе ArcGis 9.3. Для определения сроков работы зимников в программном обеспечении Surfer 11 по данным двадцати двух метеостанций строились ежедневные карты погодных условий, пригодных для эксплуатации зимников. Сопоставление двух карт позволяет уточнить сроки работы зимника для каждой конкретной делянки. Подход был опробован на территории Заонежского полуострова. Практика показала, что высокая трудоемкость обработки данных, низкое качество разрешения имеющихся в открытом доступе космических снимков за предыдущие годы вкупе с высоким уровнем облачности на территории Карелии в осенне-зимний период затрудняют применение данного подхода в масштабах всего региона.
