Boosting competence-orientation in undergraduate medical education – A web-based tool linking curricular mapping and visual analytics

Abstract: In view of huge amounts of data and complex curricular structures, the MERlin database facilitates effective curriculum mapping, goal-oriented curriculum development, comparison to national competency-based standards, effective data sharing and benchmarking across faculties with different curriculum management systems.

“…While semantic frameworks in the form of catalogues of learning objectives are developed for specific subjects [ 30 ] and are also regularly updated [ 31 ], the technical implementation of harmonized specification and exchange formats is an unsolved problem. This makes complex mappings of learning objectives necessary [ 32 ] for which supporting tools have been developed [ 33 ], but which still require manual work and interpretation. A semantically and syntactically standardized digital recording of learning objectives would not only support the work of curricular integration in teaching networks, but also facilitate the process of implementing subject-specific learning objectives (here in medical informatics), as is already being done in some national catalogs of learning objectives such as the NKLM.…”

“…The benchmarking approach with a common mapping database and consented procedures [22] applied in this study, appears an appropriate strategy to support monitoring of CBME implementation [21]. Mapping data can be applied in that way at any time during curricular developmental processes.…”

“…For the normalisation of the process and to ensure data quality, all faculties used the MERlin mapping database [22] as a common instrument and followed consented procedures, supported by hands-on instruction and individual counselling by the CCMD staff. Each faculty entered its curricular data into a separate protected data repository within the web-based MERlin-database application.…”

“…Web-based learning is not only use in the classroom. To describe and demonstrate the quality and local profiles of educational programs, web-based curriculum mapping tools of the last decade started to use techniques for big data handling and/or visual analytics for describing the so-called "big picture" (Fritze et al, 2018). To support the leaning with web base environment we need an innovative model.…”
