Book Review: Acoustic Absorbers and Diffusers: Theory, Design and Application

Abstract: This book is concerned with factors that affect the way in which sound is reflected from a surface with particular emphasis on those surfaces found in auditoria. The two aspects, absorption and diffusion, are covered but the main novelty is the treatment of diffusion. Both authors have achieved well deserved international recognition for undertaking fundamental research on this topic over the last fifteen years. Trevor Cox has concentrated on the aspects of modelling, prediction and measurement whilst Peter D'… Show more

“…Lastly, we note that the ventromedial surface of the crests of Platanista is highly rugose, a characteristic that would also influence the reflective properties of the crests. More complex surfaces provide a relatively larger surface for sound to interact with, and thus function better as sound absorbers and sound diffusers than as sound reflectors [72]. However, if the interface between the air sac system and the soft tissue acts to reflect sound, then the surface of this bone may not be important in determining the reflective properties of this system.…”

“…As Acklin (2011, p. 2) stated, many SMEs are still unaware of design as a strategic resource because of different types of barriers and problems. Limited human and financial resources, less formal or nonexistent product development and innovation processes (Fueglistaller, 2004), lack of access to design resources (Cox, 2005) or poor design understanding (Moultrie et al , 2007) make difficult the development and integration of a design management function in SMEs.…”

“…Among the extensive literature on design management, many previous studies focused, for example, on the characteristics of a product design; in particular, a product design may be defined as a “beautiful and well made” product which combines functionality, expressed by technology, with aesthetic form and/or symbolic value (Bloch, 2011; Ravasi and Rindova, 2008; Luchs and Swan, 2011; D'Ippolito, 2014). Other previous studies examined the types of barriers and problems small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have to overcome to adopt DDI such as lack of design resources (Cox, 2005; Landoni et al , 2016) or human and financial resources (Fuesglistaller, 2004; D'Ippolito, 2014) or design culture (Moultrie et al , 2007). Some studies also analysed how a product design creates value for customers as it meets the rational and emotional needs of customers (among others Bloch, 2011; D'Ippolito 2014).…”
