Bone morphogenetic protein and activin membrane‑bound inhibitor overexpression inhibits gastric tumor cell invasion via the transforming growth factor‑β/epithelial‑mesenchymal transition signaling pathway

Abstract: Gastric carcinoma is one of the most common human malignancies and remains the second leading cause of cancer-associated mortality worldwide. Gastric carcinoma is characterized by early-stage metastasis and is typically diagnosed in the advanced stage. Previous results have indicated that bone morphogenetic protein and activin membrane-bound inhibitor (BAMBI) overexpression has been demonstrated to inhibit growth and metastasis of gastric cancer cells. However, the molecular mechanisms of the BAMBI-mediated si… Show more

“…Bambi overexpression was confirmed on the protein level by immunohistochemistry for breast carcinoma cells MDA-MB-231 and by flow cytometry for gastric carcinoma cells MKN28 (Figures 1 and 2). Recently, BAMBI overexpression was found to inhibit growth and metastasis of gastric cancer cells (23). Thus, our data suggest that PpIX reduces TGF-beta signaling and tumor cell growth.…”

“…In addition, there is a therapeutic effect on the development of prostate cancer [47]. Although the BAMBI protein has been studied in many diseases such as tumors and tissue fibrosis [48, 49], the influence of traditional Chinese medicine on BAMBI in BPH is poorly understood. In the present study, we found that BAMBI mRNA and protein were expressed in rat prostate specimens and upregulated with KQR treatment.…”

“…Several factors that regulate TGF-β1 activity have been identified and are being investigated as potential anticancer molecules for the prevention of PM in GC. For example, bone morphogenic protein and activin membrane-bound inhibitor (BAMBI) inhibited the TGF-β/EMT signaling pathway and suppressed the invasiveness of gastric tumors [ 77 ]; ASPP2 inhibited TGF-β1-induced EMT in GC cells by inhibiting in them the phosphorylation and nuclear accumulation of Smad2/3 [ 78 ]; and Ki26894, a TβR-I kinase inhibitor showed a decrease in invasiveness and EMT in GC [ 79 ]. These results imply the possibility of promising drugs targeting TGF-β1.…”
