Bone cements for percutaneous vertebroplasty and balloon kyphoplasty: Current status and future developments

Abstract: SummaryOsteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) have gradually evolved into a serious health care problem globally. In order to reduce the morbidity of OVCF patients and improve their life quality, two minimally invasive surgery procedures, vertebroplasty (VP) and balloon kyphoplasty (BKP), have been developed. Both VP and BKP require the injection of bone cement into the vertebrae of patients to stabilize fractured vertebra. As such, bone cement as the filling material plays an essential role in t… Show more

“…However, the BC poses some significant limitations such as high exothermic temperature (>70°C), fatigue failures, aspetic loosening, and predominant residual free radicals toxicity, which are generated during the in situ polymerization. (He et al, ; Jaiswal et al, ; Kapusetti et al, ; Lewis & Ed, ; Lopez‐Heredia et al, ; Marrs, Andrews, Rantell, & Pienkowski, ; Misra, Kapusetti, Jaiswal, & Maiti, ; Nussbaum, Gailloud, & Murphy, ; Vaishya, Chauhan, & Vaish, ) The exothermic polymerization of BC is processed by radical‐initiated chain growth reactions (He et al, ). During polymerization, the DMPT breaks down and interacts with BPO to form phenyl radical and attacks the double bond of the MMA monomer and leads further polymerization process (Jaiswal et al, ; Lewis & Ed, ; Nussbaum et al, ).…”

“…The bone cement used in the operation plays a vital role in the curative effect of BKP. 1 PMMA bone cement has obvious advantages, such as appropriate syringeability, solidication characteristics, mechanical strength and radiopacity. However, its application is limited because of a lack of osteoconduction, biodegradability, osteogenesis, etc.…”
