Bond Strength to Primed Ti-6Al-7Nb Alloy of Two Acrylic Resin Adhesives

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the bonding behavior of two acrylic resin adhesives joined to titanium-aluminum-niobium(Ti-6Al-7Nb)alloy primed with two metal conditioners. Cast Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy disks were air-abraded with alumina and bonded with six combinations of two resin adhesives(Super-Bond C&B and Multi Bond)and three surface conditions(Alloy Primer, M.L. Primer, and unprimed control) . Shear bond strengths were determined both before and after 20,000 thermal cycles. The tri-n-butylborane initiated Super-B… Show more

“…**Reduction from 0 to 20,000: Significant difference between pre-and post-thermocycling bond strengths was found for all groups (Mann-Whitney U test; p<0.001). Table 2 These results agreed with previous investigations which found MDP monomer to be effective for bonding Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy 10,[12][13][14][15][16] . As for the bonding mechanism between the Alloy Primer or Estenia Opaque Primer and base metal alloys, it is considered to be chemical interaction between MDP phosphate monomer and chromium 24) .…”

“…Bond strength to base metal alloys has improved thereafter with the use of a hydrophobic phosphate monomer [4][5][6][7][8][9] . In addition, bonding to titanium-aluminum-niobium (Ti-6Al-7Nb) alloy has been widely evaluated as this alloy is applicable to both fixed and removable dentures [10][11][12][13][14][15][16] . A thiol monomer was originally developed for coating copper 17) , but its bonding to dental noble metal alloys has also been evaluated [18][19][20][21] .…”

“…This can be explained by the difference in type of initiation system [34]. Undesirable salt formation by an acidic monomer such as MAC-10 in the liquid component negatively affected the bonding between the zirconia and M bond resin cement [34].…”

“…Compared with the BPO-amine initiator, the TBB initiator in the SB material was reported to be effective for enhancing the bond adherence 20) . Moreover, for the BPO-amine redoxinitiated resin, the possibility of salt formation if an acidic monomer was added to the liquid component was reported, and it was speculated that the formation of an undesirable salt negatively affected the bonding behavior 11) . These findings support the results of the present study, which indicate that the SB resin exhibited superior bond strength compared to the MB resin.…”

“…Such methods include tin plating, pryrosilicoating, tribochemical silica coating, titanium dioxide coating, and spark erosion [3][4][5][6][7] . Another technique is the direct application of acidic methacrylate monomers, which involves the application of a single liquid metal conditioner containing carboxylic or phosphate monomers [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] so as to create a chemical bond. Although these bonding systems have improved, there is limited information available concerning the relation between combinations of surface modifications or primings and the resultant bonding durability of titanium 16,17) .…”
