Bohler's and Gissane Angles in the Indian Population

Abstract: Objective:The aim of our study is to determine the normal ranges of the calcaneal parameters in the Indian population, and to compare the results with the data in the literature.Materials and Methods:The study was conducted at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, Coimbatore on the feet (324 in number) of male and female Indian adults. Lateral view of the ankle was taken using a digital X-ray machine. Two parameters namely Bohler`s and Gissane angles were measured, independently by two radiologists to prevent i… Show more

“…Interestingly, there are few studies with results conflicting with these findings. In these reports, BA varies with sex and age, and shows a negative correlation with senility . The representativeness of the sample and statistics management may provide reasons for this kind of confliction.…”

“…3b) is formed by the line from the calcaneal sulcus to the tip of the anterior surface of the calcaneus, and the posterior facet. This angle was divided in three predefined groups based upon the normal values for Gissane's angle (mean 123 to 127°, with a standard deviation 6 to 8°, and a range from 108 to 138°) [22,23].…”

“…Gissane's angle is rarely used in modern research. The normal range for BA in the atraumatic adult calcaneus has been quoted between roughly 20-458 [2,11,12], and the normal range of CAG has been quoted between 958 and 1508 [11,13]. Historically, injury severity is judged by the degree to which these angles are depressed as a result of injury.…”
