Body size, energetic and foraging mode of raptors in central Chile

Abstract: An inferential analysis of the foraging mode (opportunist or mediate by prey selection) of a taxonomic assemblage of raptors in central Chile was conducted. The analysis of energetic aspects such as daily requirements of predators and energy supplied by the preys, with estimations of prey relative abundances and their incidence in the diet of raptors, led us to conclude that contrarly to the opportunistic hunting mode suggested by others authors, these predators apparently present prey selection (on a biomass … Show more

“…In other cases, as we observed in our results, consumption focuses mostly on adult individuals and is related to the daily energy requirements of the predator. According to Bozinovic and Medel (1988), larger prey in a single capture provide all or most of their daily energy requirements and thus will be more frequent in the diet while smaller prey will require more than a single catch. Thus, adult prey selection is more cost-effective.…”

“…Within these flocks, waterbird species are highly variable in size, abundance and spatial arrangement, which constitutes an appropriate scenario to assess possible factors influencing prey preferences by this wild small cat. If predator choices are contingent upon prey attributes, such as prey availability and energy constraints (Bozinovic and Medel 1988;Jaksic 1989), these prey attributes (abundance, size and distance of prey before attack) should affect predator choice. The aim of this study was to investigate if O. geoffroyi shows opportunistic behaviors by responding to seasonal changes in waterbird prey abundance or shows selective behaviors.…”

“…Bozinovic & Medel (1988) analyzed the energetic requirements of this and other raptors, proposing that preys of the size of O. longicaudatus provide the best energetic return at minimal effort for the Barn owl. This reason may explain why Barn owl was preying mainly on O. longicaudatus, and this owl may prey on other items when the abundance of O. longicaudatus decreases below a threshold level despite the larger biomass of other preys such as Rattus spp.…”
