ObjectivesObesity consistently predicts depression risk, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Body concerns are proposed as key. South Korean society is characterized by extremely high levels of explicit weight stigma, possibly the highest globally. Using cross‐sectional Korean 2014 National Health Examination Survey (KNHANES) data, we test this proposition in a nationally representative sample of South Korean adults (N = 5,632).MethodsDepressive symptoms (outcome variable), was based on the PHQ‐9. Weight status (predictor variable), was based on direct measures of height and weight converted to BMI. Weight concern was self‐reported. Mediation analyses tested how weight concern mediated the influence of weight status on depressive symptoms for women and men.ResultsCurrent weight status influenced depressive symptoms in Korean adults, but not always directly. Concerns of being “fat” mediated that relationship. The effect increased significantly as BMI increased within “normal” and overweight/obese categories for women, and in overweight/obese categories for men. Even though women classified as underweight were significantly more depressed than those in other weight categories, there was no similar mediation effect related to weight concerns.ConclusionFor South Koreans, the stress of adhering to social norms and avoiding stigma related to body weight seems to explain the relationship between higher body weight and more depressive symptoms. Women are more vulnerable overall, but men are not immune. This study demonstrates that body concerns help explain why weight predicts depression, and more broadly supports the proposition that widespread weight‐related stigma is a potentially major, if unrecognized, driver of population‐level health disparities.

This study has, therefore, evaluated the relevance of BMI to suicidal ideation and self-harming behavior after controlling for body weight perception (BWP) and other potential confounding factors.Methods: BMI, BWP, suicidal ideation and self-harming behavior were all assessed using a self-report questionnaire administered to 18,104 Japanese adolescents. Potential confounding factors were also evaluated. The data were then analyzed using bivariate and multivariate logistic regression.Results: Low BMI was associated with suicidal ideation and deliberate self-harm when controlling for sex, age, drug use, emotional distress and BWP.Conclusions: Low BMI may be an independent risk factor for suicidal ideation and deliberate self-harming behavior in Japanese adolescents.

-The aim of study is to evaluate the impact of body dissatisfaction and obesity on suicide attempts in patients suffering from Bipolar Affective Disorder (BAD). The study included a cross-sectional cohort of patients diagnosed with BAD who were treated at Sveti Ivan Psychiatric Hospital in Zagreb. The studied group was composed of female patients in the remission phase of BAD, aged 18 to 65 years. Through evaluation of the Body Mass Index (BMI), patients were divided into two groups: the study group (BMI>30), and a control group (BMI ranging from 18 to 25). Following this segmentation, the patients filled out two questionnaires: a schematic perception test (Figure Rating Scale) to determine body dissatisfaction, and a modified Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation to determine suicidal intensity. The study established a difference in body dissatisfaction between obese patients and patients with average body weight suffering from BAD. Higher BMI corresponded with higher dissatisfaction with body appearance. In addition, the study determined a statistically significant difference in suicidal intensity according to the Beck scale with regard to the level of satisfaction with body appearance. A significant correlation between dissatisfaction with body appearance and suicidal intensity according to the Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation indicates that evaluation of dissatisfaction with body appearance could be used in daily clinical work as an indicator for suicidality in patients suffering from BAD. Statistically significant body dissatisfaction and a generally higher level of dissatisfaction, which have been confirmed as predictors of suicidality, were found in obese patients.
