Body fat assessment in Sri Lankan adolescent girls; development of a simple field tool

Abstract: Existing SFT prediction-equations are unsuitable for predicting %FM in this population. The new equation utilizing one peripheral and one truncal skin-fold, is appropriate for prediction of %FM in this population and may be applicable to other South Asian/Asian-Indian adolescents following validation.

“…Lanerolle-Dias et al (2011), observaron que los valores en población adolescente de Sri Lanka, son muy similares a la encontrada en población china. Igualmente estudios realizados en población infantil de la etnia aymará de Arica (Espinoza-Navarro, et al, 2009) determinaron que los índices de masa corporal en esta etnia son significativamente menores con respecto a la población infantil no aymará.…”

“…Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy has previously been shown to be a robust estimation method of detection of deuterium in saliva. Hence, deuterium dilution determined by FTIR can be used in validation of SFT equations for prediction of %FM [ 13 ].…”

“…The triceps and supra-iliac skin fold thickness required for the equation was measured in triplicate on the left side of the body, in accordance with standard protocols [12], using a Harpenden caliper (gradation 0.2 mm, range: 80 mm, Seca, HSK-BI), to the nearest 1 mm. The average of three SFT recordings was used in the analysis.…”

“…A skin-fold thickness (SFT) equation [12] specific for 15-19 year old Sri Lankan adolescent girls was used for the calculation of percentage body fat. The triceps and supra-iliac skin fold thickness required for the equation was measured in triplicate on the left side of the body, in accordance with standard protocols [12], using a Harpenden caliper (gradation 0.2 mm, range: 80 mm, Seca, HSK-BI), to the nearest 1 mm.…”
