Body Composition and Water Compartment Measurements in Boys with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Abstract: DMD patients have elevated ECW/ICW ratios compared with obese subjects and nonobese controls. However, obese subjects and nonobese controls had similar ECW/ICW ratios, despite the increased fat tissue mass in obese subjects. This suggests that the elevated ECW/ICW ratios in DMD subjects are not due to increased fat mass but rather some other mechanism, likely impaired cellular homeostasis due to muscle membrane instability. Although MFBIA slightly underestimates lean tissue mass in boys with DMD, it has a pote… Show more

“…A porcentagem de gordura desse grupo foi de 41,1 ± 20,5% encontrando-se elevada quando comparada com os valores descritos por Deurenberg (28). A massa de gordura foi de 8,46 ± 6,21 kg, compatível com o encontrado no estudo de McDonald (22), cujos valores apresentados foram de 10,5 ± 2,1 kg.…”

“…A DEXA total-body scanner (QDR-4500A; Hologic, Inc., Bedford, Massachusetts) was used to obtain regional and wholebody composition measurements using a three-compartment model of body composition: LTM, FTM, and BMC. We utilized the same protocol previously described by McDonald et al 6 For regional body composition measures, Hologic post-processing soft-ware (Whole Body, version 8.26a:3a) was used to define body segments (trunk, entire arm, upper arm, entire leg, thigh, and lower leg). The forearm region was estimated by subtracting the upper arm value from the entire arm value.…”
