Results of the present study suggest that by articulating an individual's experience of the surface of his body one can differentially sensitize him to the surface qualities of external, nonbody objects. These results are consistent both with sensory-tonic field theoretical research demonstrating the interactive nature of body and nonbody spatial coordinate systems, and with body image research relating patterns of body activation or attention to the perception of inkblot stimuli. Past body-image research has been primarily correlative in nature and has tended to view patterns of body activation as a response to one's "body image." By experimentally manipulating subjects* body experience-treating it as the independent variable-the present study raises questions as to the nature of the underlying causal relationship between body experience and body image, and the relative weight to be given historical vs contemporary determinants of the body image.

Una de las orientaciones más clásicas en el estudio de las actitudes, ha consistido en caracterizar a éstas en términos de un componente motor o, más genéricamente, conductual. El concepto de «actitud» posee, según los clásicos de la Psicología Social (vid. Allport, 1968), un doble significado implicito: se trata de una disposición, una inclinación tanto mental como motora, conductual.Paradójicamente, tal punto de vista es tan conocido como poco comprendido. Lamberth (1980), es muy gráfico cuando, en un texto reciente, plantea el tema: «Recordemos que las primeras deficiones de actitud insisten en su componente comportamental, pero, a través de la amarga experiencia, los teóricos posteriores de las actitudes o bien han eliminado toda réferencia a la conducta, o la han limitado a la conducta mental.» (Lamberth, 1982, pág. 224) Así, lo que en un principio fue un componente básico de la actitud se ha ido convirtiendo en un problema independiente centrado en torno a la relación entre actitudes y conducta; ya no se trata de estudiar la actitud como conducta, sino la relación secuencial entre actitudes y conducta, entendidos ambos elementos como independientes.La presente investigación se propone volver a rastrear el com-* Gregorio J.
