Body Appreciation Scale: Evaluation of Factor structure and Psychometric Properties among Male and Female Turkish University Students

Abstract: The Body Appreciation Scale (BAS) was developed by Avalos, Tylka & Wood-Barcalow (2005) to determine body appreciation. The present study examined the factor structure of the BAS among Turkish women and men university students. For this purpose, confirmatory factor analysis (competing model analysis) was conducted to evaluate the factor structure the BAS. Results from the confirmatory factor analysis on 741 university student (431 women; 310 men) suggested that a two-factor model with four items deleted repres… Show more

“…Although the above-cited measuring instrument is ideal for measuring each dimension of the body separately; the technological developments since the adaptation of scale, varying ideal body dimensions imposed in time, the influence of models presented as ideal body on the meaning attributed by an individual to his/her body, the proliferation of mass media and the further exposure of individuals to the social beauty ideals of today's world through mass media prove the necessity to develop a new measuring instrument. Besides, other adaptation efforts were exerted to bring measuring instruments to the literature in Turkey to measure the body image (Anlı et al, 2015;Bakalım & Taşdelen-Karçkay, 2016;Doğan, 2010;Doğan et al, 2011;Yağmur & Tosun, 2018); however, the use of these measuring instruments was quite limited. On the other side, the adapted measuring instruments bear certain limitations similar to those of the Body Cathexis Scale.…”

“…In the international literature, there are measuring instruments developed to measure the body images of an individual (Avolos et al, 2005;Callaghan et al, 2015;Cash et al, 2002;Cash et al, 2005;Cooper et al, 1987;Cuzzolaro et al, 2006;Hormes et al, 2008;McKinley & Hyde, 1996;Mendelson et al, 2001;Secord & Jourard, 1953;Tylka & Wood-Barcolow, 2015;Tylka et al, 2005); on the other side, examining the literature in Turkey, efforts are noticed for adapting the body image measuring instruments (Anlı et al, 2015;Bakalım & Taşdelen-Karçkay, 2016;Doğan, 2010;Doğan et al, 2011;Hovardaoğlu 1993;Yağmurcu & Tosun, 2018). For this reason, developing a measuring instrument intrinsic to the Turkish literature is considered to be a significant need.…”

“…Son yıllarda literatürde vücut imajı algısı değerlendirmeleri kapsamlı bir yer tutmaktadır. Vücut İdrak Ölçümü (Measure of Body Apperception) (Peroni ve ark, 2017), Vücut Takibi (Body Tracing ) (Breakey, 1997), Çok Boyutlu Öz-Vücut İlişkisi Ölçeği (Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire) (Cash, 2015), Vücut Algısı Ölçeği (Hovardaoğlu, 1993), Vücut Memnuniyeti Ölçeği (Bakalım & Taşdelen-Karkçay, 2016) araştırmalarda sık kullanılan değerlendirme araçlarına örnektir. Bu ölçeklerden Vücut Algısı Ölçeği'nin ve Vücut Memnuniyeti Ölçeği'nin Türkçe geçerlilik ve güvenilirlik çalışmaları yapılmıştır.…”
