Bodice Pattern Development Using Somatographic and Physical Data

Abstract: Explores the geometric nature of the upper female torso using photographic data, physical measurements, and computer technology to develop bodice patterns. Body measurements, in addition to front and side view photographs, provided data for 12 female subjects participating in the study. These data were used to develop the experimental methodology and a computer program was written to generate sloper patterns for the upper female torso. A conventional pattern drafting method was used to develop hand‐drafted bod… Show more

“…Precise body angle measurements can be taken to define the posture and proportions of older women more accurately. This information is useful to develop dress forms shaped to the dimensions of older women, effective basic pattern shapes for ready-to-wear clothing, and custom-fitted patterns (Hinds, McCartney, Hadden, & Diamond, 1992;Shen & Huck, 1993).…”

“…In addition, clothing fi t is infl uenced by fashion, style and other factors such as design (Efrat, 1982). Lastly, a good fi t should provide a tidy and smooth appearance and again should allow maximum comfort and movement for the wearer (Shen and Huck, 1993). LaBat and DeLong (1990) stated that external factors such as the sizing systems also affect consumers' fi t satisfaction, body image and body cathexis.…”

“…Armhole circle measurement is available in scanner software and can help determine the length of the curve (see figure 8 and 9). Experimental studies have sought to develop and alter patterns [25], [26]. These studies incorporated conventional body measurements, graphing techniques and body angle measurements.…”
