Aging population ratios are rising significantly. Health monitoring systems (HMS) in smart environments have evolved rapidly to become a viable alternative to traditional healthcare solutions. The aim of HMS is to not only reduce costs but to also provide timely e-health services to individuals wishing to maintain their independence. In this way, elderly people can avoid, for as long as possible, any interaction with healthcare institutions (e.g. nursing homes and hospitals), which in turn reduces pressure on the health system. To fully realise this vision of seamless e-health services supporting people in need of them, a number of challenges that need further investigation still exist. To this end, we provide an overview of the current state of the art for smart health monitoring systems. We review HMS in smart environments from a general perspective and with a particular focus on systems for the elderly and dependent people. We look at the challenges for these systems from the perspective of developing the technology itself, system requirements, system design and modelling. We present a consolidated picture of the most important functions and services offered by HMS for monitoring and detecting human behaviour including its concepts, approaches, and processing techniques. Moreover, we provide an extensive, in-depth analysis and evaluation of the existing research findings in the area of e-health systems. Finally, we present challenges and open issues facing the smart HMS field and we make recommendations on how to improve future systems.

This paper proposes the concept overall concept of a bluetooth-based proximity IoT device. Its methodology is introduced along with a working prototype. Potential applications and viability for data analysis is also discussed. In summary, such a device accomplishes the goal of closerange information communication in an effective, secure and reliable way through the use of beacons utilizing the BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) Technology, a variety of different receiver devices that has native support for Bluetooth as well as a database used for data storage and retrieval. The biggest advantage of this technology is that proximity-based Internet has virtually endless potential for applications in the real world, including healthcare, retail and industrial manufacturing.

Wearable devices enable the unobtrusive sensing of a wide range of human activities and the development of innovative applications. Wireless communication capabilities are one of the crucial features of networked wearable devices, since they set data exchange specifications and heavily affect the power consumption of the devices. In this paper, we investigate the use of the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) standard for the development of wearable devices with elevated data throughput requirements such as Health-related applications. In particular, we focus on the application-level and analyze the performance of different BLE modules when interfaced with a smartphone in single-and multislave configurations. Data throughput and power consumption are evaluated in relation to the parameters of the protocol and we present to the reader useful guidelines for an optimal integration of BLE in devices with data streaming capabilities.978-1-4799-8981-2/15/$31.00 ©2015 IEEE
