Bluetooth low energy technologies for applications in health care: proximity and physiological signals monitors

Abstract: Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is an exciting technology for health care applications. The big advantage over previous wireless technologies are its explicit low power design that allows deployment of such devices over many months or even years without the need to change batteries. This is especially critical in home health monitoring where compliance can often not be assumed. Here we describe the design of two Bluetooth Low Energy devices based on the BLE112 module from BlueGiga. Wireless, health technology, Blue… Show more

“…Recently, in medical sensor networking, there has been a tendency to use the new low-power standard, Bluetooth low energy (BLE). BLE allows sensors and devices to operate for over a year without recharging or changing battery [223] [51]. Despite the the low-power issue being addressed in many previous studies, it is still a significant issue that needs further research in HMS.…”

“…Although it seems that technology is generally accessible to almost everyone in the society, many individuals are not able to access these products and services due to medical conditions (such as Alzheimer's) or other special circumstances. Because of this, these people can face many notable challenges in the society [12].…”

“…Since the introduction of BLE in 2010, its benefits in terms of connectivity and low power consumption have been exploited in BSNs, with several applications: motion sensing [11,12,13], ECG and biopotential sensing [14,15,16,17], blood pressure measurement [18]. BLE is optimized for low power applications and its power consumption has been compared to competing communication protocols (Bluetooth, ZigBee and ANT) [8].…”
