Blood Trauma in Plastic Haemodialysis Cannulae

Abstract: To investigate the haemolysis in haemodialysis cannulae, an in-vitro set up is built, using a unipuncture dialysis system. This system is connected to a bag with fresh calf's blood, by the cannula under test, mounted in a large bloodline (5mm diameter). The blood characteristics are kept constant by means of a bicarbonate dialysate in the dialyser. During a 6h period, haematological parameters are regularly sampled. Flow through the cannulae is recorded, which is about 500mUmin. Four different cannulae are tes… Show more

“…In our system, the caliber of the hemofilter circuit to where part of the ECLS blood was diverted was 50% of the caliber of the remainder of the ECLS circuit. De Wachter et al [26] demonstrated, in vitro, that FHb levels varied inversely with the sizes of the cannulae connecting to a blood line with a large bore. On the other hand, Luckraz et al [27] observed enhanced hemolysis when CRRT was initiated through a separate vascular access in patients requiring ventricular assist device support.…”
