Blood‐Contacting Biomaterials: Bioengineering Viewpoints

Abstract: The investigation of blood-contacting biomaterials is an important challenge and is relevant for an improvement in the clinical application of biomaterials. With the purpose of improved clinical treatment, bioengineering viewpoints of blood-contacting biomaterials cover the material options and selection, the utilization of materials, the development of materials with better properties, and processing characteristics, and the design of relevant evaluation procedures. The bioengineering objective remains that o… Show more

“…It is only a matter of time until the costs for incorporating this technology are reduced to that point that it becomes a standard of care for the conduct of CPB. 18 We should also cite the studies of condensed circuit and pharmacologic strategies to increase biocompatibility by modulating the inflammatory response that have been attempted by several investigators. 19,20 Also the advantages of the use of mechanical strategies such as leukocyte depletion filters and hemoconcentrators as adjuncts were documented.…”

“…Our previous experience relating to the evaluation of adsorbents for the removal of solutes from the blood 36 and the assessment of blood-contacting biomaterials, 37 led us to the view that novel polymeric biomaterials could be developed by the utilization of CDs.…”
