Blockchain-enabled supply chain operations and financing: the perspective of expectancy theory

Abstract: PurposeThis study examines the cognitive factors of adopting blockchain technology in various supply chain scenarios and its role in reframing the distinctive values of supply chain financing. Based on expectancy theory, this study explores the different profiles underlying the components of expectancy, valence and instrumentality.Design/methodology/approachThis is a multiple-case study of four Fintech companies using blockchain technology to promote the performance of supply chain operations and financing.Fin… Show more

“…Expectancy theory is considered the influential theory used to explain employee motivation (Chiang and Jang, 2008; Fudge and Schlacter, 1999), technology adoption (Chen et al ., 2002; Song et al ., 2023), and training (Shweiki et al ., 2015; Gegenfurtner et al ., 2009). Furthermore, to explain the training transfer behavior, expectancy theory is proposed and utilized in several studies (Yamnill and McLean, 2001; Chiaburu and Lindsay, 2008; Gegenfurtner and Vauras, 2012).…”

“…For example, Handoko et al (2022) explore the role of social capital in knowledge exchange in supply chains, which increases trust and collaboration between the actors. Studies that have used industrial network theory in supply chain management examine the impact of network relationships on the coordination of supply chain activities (Saikouk et al , 2021; Agrawal et al , 2023; Song et al , 2023). Similarly, reflecting the importance of interdependence in these networks, found that supply chain collaboration was moderated by information transparency and transaction dependence.…”

“…Despite the wide use of DTs to enhance SCFP in practice, the existing literature has mainly examined the individual effect of specific DTs on SCFP, such as blockchain technology (Tsai, 2022;Song et al, 2023a), big data (Feng, 2023;Zhou et al, 2020) and machine learning (Zhu et al, 2019;Hongjin and Ramachandran, 2021;Wang et al, 2022). These DTs have their own strengths and weaknesses when used individually, which may result in undesirable SCFP (Chakravarty et al, 2013;Khin and Ho, 2019;Kucukaltan et al, 2022;Song et al, 2023a). For example, Song et al (2023a) have proposed that merely applying blockchain as a panacea to supply chain financial activities will only produce poorer results.…”

To address this issue, various DTs can be deployed to achieve the complementarity of their strengths (Ye et al, 2022).…”
