Blend of cassava starch and high-density polyethylene with green tea for food packaging

Abstract: Plastic packagings are widely used for several food products. Considering the relatively short service lifetime of this application, it is important to perceive in the search of eco-friendly alternatives to this market, such as polymers from renewable sources, as thermoplastic starch and “green” polyethylene. The incorporation of an antibacterial agent to the packaging can extend food shelf life. Camellia sinensis is a plant with known antibacterial properties used in the preparation of “green tea.” In the pre… Show more

“…VOs are among the most significant renewable materials for polymers because of their widespread availability, natural biodegradability, low cost, minimal ecotoxicity and nontoxicity to humans. [11][12][13][14] The VOs are extracted from seeds or, less often, from other pieces of plants. India is rich in forest resources and has a wide variety of trees that produce a large number of oilseeds.…”

“…104 The third category of scaffolds is composed of polysaccharides combined with synthetic polymers. 105,106 For example, a group of scientists combined gum arabic with PCL using electrospinning method. Their results suggested that high porosity (more than 94%), great hydrophilicity, average pore size of >9 μm, and good skin cell attachment can be obtained.…”

“…24,79,80 However, most of sustainable polymers have been considered as alternatives to commodity fossil-derived polymers in applications such as packaging. 81 Current paper discusses the huge potential of such renewable polymers for biomedical field. Renewable polymers will enable develop a new class of DDSs, that is, SDDSs, based on sustainable raw materials.…”
