Blade tip clearance measurement of the turbine engines based on a multi-mode fiber coupled laser ranging system

Abstract: The blade tip clearance is a parameter of great importance to guarantee the efficiency and safety of the turbine engines. In this article, a laser ranging system designed for blade tip clearance measurement is presented. Multi-mode fiber is utilized for optical transmission to guarantee that enough optical power is received by the sensor probe. The model of the tiny sensor probe is presented. The error brought by the optical path difference of different modes of the fiber is estimated and the length of the fib… Show more

“…However, the structure of the mechanical actuator applied to drive the probe is complex and the operation of the device must be skilled, which greatly limits its development [12]. With the development of technology, there are many other tip clearance measuring methods appeared including eddy current, capacitive, microwave and optical fiber methods [13]- [16]. Eddy current system has the advantages of the small size and weight, high precision.…”

“…Optical fiber method has the advantages of simple structure, stable performance, strong resistance to electromagnetic interference ability, high sensitivity and resolution, but it also has some disadvantages. Among them, the blade reflection loss and high realization costs are the major problems to be solved [16], [27]- [30].…”

“…At present, a wide range of techniques have been reported on for the measurement of radial clearance D [15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22]. Among these techniques, the fiber-optic-based sensing approaches [17][18][19][20][21][22] are especially favored because of the intrinsic capabilities of optic fiber, such as its light weight, small size, and adaptability for embedding into structures. However, due to the narrow internal space and harsh measurement environment of the rotating machines, the measurement of the tilt angle and axial clearance under high-speed rotation is still a difficult problem that remains unsolved.…”

“…It seems obvious that an accurate and real-time measurement technology is necessary. In contrast to power-system turbines where common clearance values range from 2 to 8 mm, in aircraft turbines, TC is typically lower than 3 mm and a resolution better than 25 µm is usually required [ 8 , 9 , 10 ].…”
