Blackman–Tukey spectral estimation and electric network frequency matching from power mains and speech recordings

Abstract: Forensic applications exploit electric network frequency (ENF) as a fingerprint to determine multimedia content authenticity, as well as the time and region of multimedia recording. ENF is present at a nominal frequency of 50/60 Hz and its harmonics. Strong interference due to speech content deteriorates ENF estimation accuracy. Herein, the authors propose a non-parametric approach for ENF estimation, which incorporates a customised lag window design into the Blackman-Tukey spectral estimation method. Leakage … Show more

“…In order to further increase the detection accuracy and robustness of audio tamper methods based on ENF, some scholars study the characteristics of ENF to obtain better features. Karantaidis (Karantaidis & Kotropoulos, 2021) added a customized lag Window to the Blackman-Tukey acoustic spectrum estimation method to reduce the interference of speech content, making the estimated ENF more accurate. Guang Hua (Hua & Zhang, 2019) proposed a robust filtering algorithm (RFA) to enhance ENF signals in audio, making the extracted ENF signals more accurate.…”

“…Afterward, the prevalent frequency of each segment is estimated by spectral estimation. Frequently, a quadratic interpolation is used to overcome the interference that hinders the entire procedure and results in more precise ENF estimation [5,9]. Here, the estimated ENF signal f is calculated by employing shifts of 1 s (i.e., S = 1).…”

“…There, a weighted linear prediction approach was also employed for ENF estimation. In [9], a lag window was designed to offer an optimal trade-off between smearing and leakage by maximizing the relative energy in the main lobe of the window. It was incorporated in the Blackman-Tukey method, offering accurate ENF estimation with low computational requirements.…”
