Black Currant Anthocyanins Normalized Abnormal Levels of Serum Concentrations of Endothelin-1 in Patients with Glaucoma

Abstract: Purpose: Our recent study, which involved a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-masked 24-month trial (Ophthalmologica 2012;228:26-35), revealed that oral administration of black currant anthocyanins (BCACs) slowed down the visual field deterioration and elevation of ocular blood flow of open-angle glaucoma (OAG). To elucidate the underlying mechanisms of these BCAC-induced effects, as possible factors affecting glaucomatous optic neuropathy, changes of serum endothelin-1 (ET-1), nitric oxide (NO), and anti… Show more

“…Serum levels of endothelin-1 in placebo-treated OAG patients remained low. The study did not find an effect of intake of blackcurrants on nitric oxide concentrations in the 38 included patients (Yoshida et al 2013).…”

“…Black currant anthocyanins have been shown to normalise abnormal levels of serum concentrations of ET-1 in patients with glaucoma [298]. Food rich in flavanols, particularly cocoa, may improve endothelial function in general [299].…”

“…Additionally, Yoshida and colleagues report that administration of anthocyanins to glaucoma patients for 24 months led to a normalization of endothelin‐1 levels, and speculated that this could lead to increased ocular vasodilation and perfusion (Yoshida et al. ). Canter & Ernst () demonstrated an improvement in night vision with bilberry extract supplementation, thereby indicating its influence on ophthalmic function.…”
