Bivalve mollusks in Ulsan Bay (Korea)

Abstract: The bivalve molluscan fauna of Ulsan Bay, East Sea coast of Korea, is summarized, based on original and literature data. The fauna consists of 61 species belonging to 20 families. Seven species are identified only to genus level. Two species (Carditellopsis toneana , Carditidae and Fulvia hungerfordi (G.B. Sowerby III, 1901), Cardiidae) are new records for the East Sea coast of Korea, and one species (Crenella decussata (Montagu, 1808), Mytilidae) is a new record for Korea. Biogeographically, Ulsan Bay's bival… Show more

“…The mollusks were identified by a hydrobiologist based on morphological characteristics. The area is home to the only species of mollusks of the genus Glycymeris [45]. Hemolymph samples were drawn from adductor muscles with a sterile syringe, pooled, and centrifuged at 30,000 rpm for 1 h at 4 • C to clarify the hemolymph.…”

“…The effects of pH, temperature, and divalent cations on GYL-R were evaluated, as described previously [25]. Briefly, to study the effect of temperature, aliquots of the lectin (0.05 mL, 1 mg/mL) were incubated at 4,20,37,40,45,50,60,70,80,90, 99 and 110 • C for 30 min, and the hemagglutination was performed after cooling to the room temperature. The GYL-R pH dependence was determined by pre-incubating the aliquots of the lectin samples (0.05 mL, 1 mg/mL) with different pH buffers at 25 • C overnight: 0.1 M glycine buffer (pH 2.0; 3.0), 0.1 M acetate buffer (pH 4.0; 5.0), 0.01 M TBS (pH 8.5; 10.0-12.0).…”

“…According to the catalogue (Lutaenko and Noseworthy, 2012), the bivalve molluscan fauna of for Korea, all collected from Ulsan Bay (Lutaenko, 2014). Laternula boschasina (Reeve, 1860) (Laternulidae) was known for Ulsan Bay (Yi et al, 1982) but it was missed in the catalogue.…”

Tucetonella munda (Sowerby III, 1903) and Callista chinensis (Holten 1803) (illustrated for Busan in Lutaenko and Noseworthy (2012)); and Anomia chinensis Philippi, 1849 (Ulsan: Rho et al (1997) (Ryu et al, 2012), whereas only three chamid species are known from the eastern coast of Korea (Lutaenko and Noseworthy, 2012).…”
