Bis(trifluoromethyl)trioxide: First Structure of a Straight‐Chain Trioxide

Abstract: A skew structure with trans orientation of the two CF3 groups and with an OOOC dihedral angle of 96° describes the trioxide CF3OOOCF3 (see picture). The OO bond lengths are 1.452(5) (gas phase) and 1.437(2) Å (crystal).

“…The OϪO bond lengths compare nicely with those in F 3 ϪOϪOϪOϪCF 3 [143.7(2) crystal, 145.2(5) gas], [28] but not so well with 9tert-butyl-10-methylanthracene 9,10-ozonide [136.1(6) and 142.8 (6) pm]. The OϪO bond lengths of 146 pm indicate the single-bond character of these bonds, in contrast to the bond lengths of 127 pm in free ozone.…”

“…As precursors for fluorocarbon peroxy and oxy radicals the trioxides ROOOR 0 , R; trioxides the members with R ¼ CF 3 CðOÞ and all asymmetric ones are unknown. By analogy with the peroxides (see below) the stability of the three established species [48][49][50][51][52][53][54] decreases in the order…”

“…The mechanism comprises the following reactions: [48,49]. Vibrational [48,49,[131][132][133], NMR [48,49], and mass spectra [48,49] are known and recently it was structurally characterised in an X-ray and gas electron diffraction study [51].…”

“…Preliminary investigations show that alkyl hydrotrioxides are labile compounds that share several chemical properties with the alkyl hydroperoxides. Bis(trifluormethyl) trioxide (62), on the other hand, has been prepared from hexafluoroacetone, F 2 and O 2 on a 1.2 g scale 194 . Trioxide 62 has a boiling point of −16 • C and decomposes at 20 • C. It has been investigated by X-ray diffraction at −170 • C and shows marginal distortion from C 2 symmetry in the solid state ( Figure 28).…”
