Bis(maltolato)vanadium(III)-Polypyridyl Complexes: Synthesis, Characterization, DNA Cleavage, and Insulin Mimetic Activity

Abstract: Four vanadium(III) complexes of the general formula [V(maltol)(2)(N-N)]ClO(4), where N-N is 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) (1); 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) (2); dipyrido[3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq) (3), and dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz) (4), have been synthesized and characterized by IR, UV-visible, NMR spectroscopies, and electrospray ionization mass spectra (ESI-MS). The complexes exhibit the typical (1)H NMR spectra for paramagnetic V(III) species. The structures of complexes 1, 2, and 3 were characteri… Show more

“…As a part of research program on the interaction of metal polypyridyl complexes with DNA, a series of mixed ligand V(III) complexes was prepared [219], that contained the monoanion of 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one (maltH) and a N-N hetherocyclic ligand, i.e., 2,2 -bipyridine (bipy), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), dipyrido [3,2- The hexaanion from 2,5-bis(dicarboxymethyl)aminomethyl-1,4-benzenediol (bicahH 6 ) coordinated two V(III) ions [220], giving a species that at pH 3.2 underwent reversible oxidation to V(IV) ( Table 9, entry 13), whereas reductions resulted ligand-centered.…”

“…Vanadium-containing complexes with glutamic acid, bipyridine, or hydroxypyridinonate ligands for example [111][112][113][114] exhibit insulin-like properties. Some complexes are also stable in gastric juice, allowing oral administration.…”
