Birth prevalence of cryptorchidism and hypospadias in northern England, 1993-2000

Abstract: HES data were of high quality for the study period. There was no significant change in the prevalence of surgically corrected hypospadias. However, there was an apparent decline in the prevalence of surgically corrected cryptorchidism that may reflect a decrease in the prevalence of the condition or may be due to a decrease in the rate of surgical intervention.

“…The average annual increase in Denmark from 1977 to 2005 was 2.40% (Lund et al, 2009). In northern England, the birth prevalence increased at a rate of 0.05 per 1000 male live births per year between 1993 and 2000 (Abdullah et al 2007a). However, reports from Scotland for 1988 to 1997 (Ahmed et al, 2004), New York for 1992-2005(Fisch et al, 2009), California for 1989to 1997(Carmichael et al, 2003, Washington for 1987 to 2002 (Porter et al, 2005), and Hokkaido, Japan for 1985 to 1997 (Kurahashi et al, 2004) did not indicate any growth trends in prevalence rates.…”

“…The prevalences of overall and isolated hypospadias in China were 9.03 and 7.64 per 10,000 male births, respectively, and lower than in the data reported by other countries or regions. For example, the total prevalence of hypospadias was 34.9 per 10,000 live births in New York in 1992 to 2005 (Fisch et al, 2009), 29 per 10,000 male births in Bulgaria (Kumanov et al, 2007), 31 per 10,000 male births in northern England in 1993 to 2000 (Abdullah et al, 2007a), and 73 per 10,000 male births in the Netherlands (Pierik et al, 2002). The prevalences of overall and isolated hypospadias were 34.8 and 28.5 per 10,000 births in Western Australia in 1980 to 2000 (Nassar et al, 2007).…”
