Birth outcomes and risk factors in adolescent pregnancies: Results of a Taiwanese national survey

Abstract: Adolescent pregnancy carries a high-risk of LBW and premature birth. Inadequate prenatal care and weight gain during pregnancy are contributing factors that could be improved through strategies of health education, family support and case management.

“…Additionally, women with cesarean history or antepartum hemorrhage were more likely to undergo cesarean delivery [21]. Consistent with prior research [10, 1215, 21], we also noted that cesarean delivery rate was lower in the adolescent mothers than in their older counterparts.…”

“…Our finding is consistent with previous studies [7, 10, 11, 14, 22] suggesting that young maternal age is associated to an increased risk of preterm delivery, even after controlling for covariates. This higher risk among adolescents was partially explained by other accompanying medical problems, poor maternal diet and nutrient intakes, and inadequate prenatal care [10, 12]. However, other studies reported little or no significant difference between adolescence and preterm delivery [13, 15, 16, 21], although these were not mutually exclusive and could be attributed to a combination of these factors.…”

“…This was in line with results of many other studies conducted across the world (20, 21). Low birth weight is caused by different factors such as mother's disease before pregnancy, pregnancy complications, mother's lifestyle, (20) mother’s age, prenatal care, mother's weight gain during pregnancy (22), and other variables, which can be determined and controlled to reduce infant mortality. Paying attention to these factors especially in the low socioeconomic groups, who may have less access to healthcare services, must be set as a top health priority.…”

“…LBW is related not only to basic maternal characteristics during pre-pregnancy, but also to potential risk factors during pregnancy, including maternal age, educational attainment, lifestyle, health status, and diseases (5), of which maternal age, educational attainment, and marital status are more closely associated with LBW. In addition, most current studies of LBW risk factors have focused on environmental, psychosocial, behavioral, and medical factors (7)(8)(9). Many medical factors and basic diseases are also reported to be related to LBW, including diabetes, preeclampsia, and oligohydramnios (10).…”
