Birds in the west coast of South Kalimantan, Indonesia

Abstract: Abstract. Riefani MK, Soendjoto MA. 2021. Birds in the west coast of South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 278-287. There is no comprehensive data on birds in the west coast of South Kalimantan, yet the areas are pressured by human activities, especially the rapidly growing tourism. This study aimed to investigate the diversity of bird species that occurred in the west coast of South Kalimantan and to compare the similarities of bird communities across four villages used as the sampling sites, i.e. Su… Show more

“…Cluster I consisted of forest and plantation habitats with similar bird composition, whereas Cluster II consisted of built-up area and farmland habitats. In general, environmental and resource similarities contribute to the similarity of bird communities between habitats by influencing the composition of species inhabiting them to be relatively similar (Kaban 2018;Riefani and Soendjoto 2021).…”

“…The seeds of Clidemia hirta were dispersed through the feces of the frugivores Dicaeum trigonostigma and P. aurigaster, while L. camara by P. goiavier (Partasasmita 2015). The seeds of various plant species are scattered after the fruit is eaten by birds (Abdussalam et al 2021;Putra et al 2021;Riefani and Soendjoto 2021;Romansah et al 2018;Wulansari et al 2020). The reduced abundance of C. frutescens together with the absence of forest birds on Guam demonstrates the important role birds play in the ecosystem (Egerer et al 2018).…”

“…Indonesia is situated within the East Asian Flyway’s island or oceanic routes linking eastern Russia and Japan to the Philippines and eastern Indonesia ( 12 ). One stopover site is on the west coast of South Kalimantan, where 23 migratory bird species have been identified and observed ( 13 ). Migratory birds often use stopover sites for 1 day to several weeks to rest and refuel ( 12 ), providing opportunities for virus transmission through direct or indirect contacts with local wild birds or aquatic poultry within their shared habitats.…”
