Biotechnological, nutritional and therapeutic uses of Pleurotus spp. (Oyster mushroom) related with its chemical composition: A review on the past decade findings

Abstract: and sterols. However, intensification of structure determination is highly desirable and demands considerable efforts. Further studies including clinical trials need to be carried out to ascertain the safety of these compounds as adequate alternatives to conventional drugs. Not less important is to extend the search for novel bioactives to less explored Pleurotus species.

“…RAPD is a valuable method in distinguishing the different genotypes in mushrooms and evaluating their genetic similarities [7]. Other various biochemical and molecular techniques applied for genetic diversity, relatedness and identification of Pleurotus species were highlighted by Maftoun et al [20] and Correa et al [4]. These methods have been verified to be efficient in identification, expressed biodiversity in taxonomic system and unique in the selection of fungal strains.…”

“…The biodiversity of Pleurotus spp. has created potential utilization with profound biological and economical values [4], but their genetic variability and taxonomic controversies still express some limiting factors [5]. However, exact characterization and identification of Pleurotus species is fundamental to reveal their true identity for maximum exploitation in food industries and for research documentation.…”

“…The edible mushroom Pleurotus sajor-caju has a known capability to degrade lignin compounds in lignocellulosic waste (Corrêa et al 2016). Laccase, phenolic oxidase, and manganese oxidase are enzymes released by P. sajor-caju to oxidize phenolic compounds to free radicals (Jeon et al 2012).…”

“…Pleurotus spp.are famous for owning all three properties expected from a food, nutrition, taste, and physiological functions, being thus appreciated for both their sensory characteristics and outstanding nutritional profile (Corrêa et al, 2016). Both basidiomata and mycelium of mushrooms contain different groups of compounds such as terpenoids, lactones, organic acids, steroids, polyphenols, tocopherols, flavonoids, phenolics, alkaloids, polysaccharides and dietary fibers.…”
