Biosynthesis of Human von Willebrand Factor

Abstract: Endothelium forms the inner lining of all blood vessels and, as a consequence, is in direct contact with the blood. Because of this and the synthesis and secretion of hemostatic components, the endothelium is able to modulate coagulation and fibrinolysis. An important hemostatic factor synthesized by endothelial cells is the von Willebrand factor (vWF). vWF is a large plasma glycoprotein which promotes the adhesion of platelets to the vessel wall after a vascular injury. vWF is initially synthesized as a pre-p… Show more

“…The gene responsible for the production of VWF has been identified and localized to chromosome 12 [3]. Normal production of VWF occurs in both vascular endothelial cells and megakaryocytes [4]. Inside endothelial cells, VWF is processed into multimers of differing molecular size.…”

However, patients with tumors larger than 2 cm in glycoprotein playing a role in hemostasis, which is initially synthesized by endothelial cells as a pre-pro-polypeptide 21 diameter, with poor differentiation (Edmondson's II to IV), and with portal vein invasion were more numerous in the and can be detected by an associated factor VIII-related antigen. 3,22 more-hypervascular subgroup (P õ .05).…”

“…7,23) vWf is an endothelial-specific glycoprotein synthesized by endothelial cells and stored in the Weibel-Palade bodies, and allows platelets to remain attached to the vessel wall. 25) vWf consists of a series of plasma multimers with molecular weights ranging from 400,000 to 20 million. A single large vWf precursor subunit is synthesized in endothelial cells.…”
