Biosynthesis, characterization and antimicrobial activity of gold nanoparticles from leaf extracts of Annona muricata

Abstract: The need to divulge the rapid synthesis, non-hazardous, cost effectiveness and eco-friendly methods for the synthesis of nanoparticles utilizing plants is of great importance. This is as a result of high toxicity associated with the chemical method of synthesizing nanoparticles. The aim of this study was to investigate the potency of the synthesized gold nanoparticle against selected human pathogens. Gold nanoparticles were synthesized by reacting 1 mM gold chloride solution with leaf extract of Annona muricat… Show more

“…Additionally, Folorunso et al investigated the antimicrobial potency of synthesized AuNPs from the leaf extracts of Annona muricata . The resulted NPs showed a spherical structure with an average size of 25.5 nm and high antibacterial activity against Clostridium sporogenes , where the efficacy increased as the NPs’ concentration increased [ 136 ].…”

“…For example, the marine extremophilic bacteria Pseudoalteromonas was used to obtain Au NPs with non-cytotoxic, non-genotoxic and non-oxidative stress generated over a range of concentrations but provoking alterations in DNA methylation and in the expression of DNA methyltransferase genes [118]. Plants such as Curcuma wenyujin extract [119], Chenopodium formosanum shell extract [120], Dillenia indica leaf aqueous extract, or Annona muricate leaf extracts were also used [123]. Au NPs were also obtained using Coffea arabica [124].…”

“…Au has a weak anti-microbial effect against many microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi (Table 1) [123,[125][126][127][128]. Conjugation with tetracycline [129] or with ampicillin [130] can enhance anti-bacterial activity.…”

“…Since few decades ago, the advance in nanoparticles technology have played a remarkable role in medical, pharmaceutical and textile industries. Metal nanoparticles like silver, zinc and gold have been used as therapeutic agents in medical institutes for some years [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Transitional metal oxides such as CuO, TiO 2 , Fe 3 O 4 , ZnO, and NiO NPs have shown effective applications as advanced nano-substances in energy, biomedical and environment fields of study.…”
